So you're advocating academics pick some popular, established viewpoint and publish instead? God knows we need more people who just follow popular opinion and call everyone else a douchebag hipster.
Critical thinking is making an argument, dumbass. The point of view doesn't matter, only the quality of the argument.
Maintainers will be easily replaced by machines. Innovators? Nobody knows. The number of opportunities will shrink, and we will always have some space for the most intelligent, but we could be waiting from five to thirty years for that to happen.
20-30 I'd think before economy of scale makes the robots that already exist to be cheaper than hiring some teenager. But yeah, within our lifetimes. Enjoy your new $15 minimum wage for now I guess.
Maintaining is pretty fucking boring imo. Anyone can maintain a thought process or business from another person. But innovation is the creation of something new and unique... mostly... except in Waterloo where innovation is a cheap catch phrase for a university that lacks in creativity and innovation in every aspect.
I hate this part of academia with a passion. Pick some contrarian theme, build thematic connections, publish.
