OMG: Whatever happened to the the UW student radio station? It's hard to believe students would rather fund that half ass paper called Imprint rather than a CRTC free radio station.
We should vote to cut Imprint funding by 50% and allocate it to a radio station (it would also be great to see if Imprint could do article in support of this). Its not uncommon to see stacks of old AF imprints lying around, littering campus, untouched, folded up so neatly, months after the issue date. This suggests that the staff at Imprint still haven't learned that they print too many papers, thus hurting the environment and wasting student money. Additionally, it's hella rare to see anyone reading an Imprint as most students know Imprint is complete garbage. If you do catch someone reading an Imprint, it's usually because the only alternative they had at the time is to die from boredom. At least with a radio station, we may get a chance to hear some good music while studying, and while perving on others on buses so we can write MC's about them. Oh what am I saying here... the arts students will just turn the radio station into a PSA voicing their own unwanted opinions on matters they no nothing about and have not experienced, instead of playing music. Let's still cut funding to Imprint though, word is that are in collusion with WPRIG to fund terrorism, and are partially responsible for 9/11, the Bataclan and Peshawar.

  1. I wish the university had a bigger involvement with the radio stn, I would love to be involved with it. Right now as far as I know the unofficial "official" radio station of UW is 100.3 SoundFM. Not a lot of quality stuff rn, wish there was.

  2. We had a radio station. In 2009 they tried to increase their fee. Their working relationship with Feds was not good, so when they tried to do this, Feds Council called a referendum on the Sound FM fee as a whole.

55% of students voted to defund the radio station. Sound FM moved off-campus not long after, and has basically been a non-entity ever since.

So you wanted to know what happened to it? Well, we did. We decided as a collective that we didn't want it.

    1. And the fun part is the fee per term was like $2, and there was this huge campaign to get rid of such a puny amount. Just goes to show people would rather have that back instead of fund something unique within the community like a radio station ... and it shows just what happens when you get on the wrong side of the Feds clique.

    2. 55% to 45% vote in favour =/= "as a collective"

Not to mention that was the same referendum that approved the Health Services expansion fee and voted down a new student space building, so it was a mixed bag.

    3. 2 here. As someone who voted "yes" to keeping the fee in that referendum, I agree completely with 2a and 2b.

    4. I voted yes too! The health service building expansion was legit but the other student center building (although it was a nice location) had little actual student space and tons of Feds and administrative offices!

    5. Only one correction. CKMS didn't try to increase their fee leading to a referendum on it's entire fee. A group of students brought forward a petition to Feds to have a referendum on the existing fee. Feds voted to do the referendum. CKMS wasn't actually allowed to represent itself in the referendum, and that rule lead to the 'No' committee being disqualified.

Imprint has some good articles about this that are worth reading up on. There were a lot of problems at CKMS, but a solution that didn't involve cutting off something like 80% of the stations revenue might have been better for the campus community..
