OMG: Christmas dinner and I'm arguing with older family members that skin colour isn't a valid reason to deny Syrian refugees.

Tried to explain how ironic it was to have this conversation while celebrating the birthday of a brown guy from the Middle East, but that only triggered them to argue that Jesus was white.

Ignorance is frustrating, and even more frustrating is that the generation above us has a worldview entirely formed by propaganda.

It's similar bullshit like this that has pushed me to start finding a new home.

FYI, this is also true for our generation.

    1. Not really, we have the internet.

    2. No, it's very true...the propaganda is just different. Next generation will be saying the same thing about us.

    3. 2 here.

2a, did you realize the Internet itself is a propaganda device?

    4. No, we are unique in that we are the first generation that has a global community with access to exponentially more information than any before us.

You're a retard if you think propaganda can propagate uninhibited on the internet.

    5. 2d, your assertion is so stupid that it is kind of ironic you call other people retards.

All the political organizations use the internet to propagate nowadays, even ISIS uses the Internet to lure people in. There may be more accessible information. But nobody reads all of them. people obtain information from a single source over time and get brainwashed without realizing it.

    6. The internet is a very different kind of propaganda machine. But it is still a propaganda machine. Our views are largely still shaped by mass media, and the internet plays a significant part in that.

So yes, our world is shaped by the ideologies around us. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

  3. I had the same discussion (turned to argument) at my family Christmas. What a waste of time.

  5. @OP: Tell them you're a Syrian.

  6. LET THEM FIGHT FOR THEIR FUCKIN COUNTRY! It pisses me off so much that they get a fuckin free ride, room and board here, but my family members who fled from Yugoslav civil war in the 1990s had to bust their ass to make a living in Canada

    1. They don't get a free ride, room and board here. Check your facts.

Also, with the greatest of respect to what your family went through, the 90s is also when we brought in the Boat People from Vietnam. 60k refugees resettled across the country - and that was a national effort to get them integrated into Canadian life and make them feel welcome.

  7. wow you sure showed them! time to completely open our borders and let anybody who wants to come in! what do you mean one of the bataclan bombers was a syrian """""""""refugee"""""""""""? it's our responsibility to destroy our own society for the benefit of foreigners, most of whom are hostile to our values and way of life. we colonised them after all, so start tying your noose; this current is going to be a doozy!

    fuck you OP

    1. Most of the Syrian refugees are middle class, educated, and fluent in English. They're also subjected to an intensely rigourous screening process, both by the UN and by our government. Germany has taken over 1 million and they haven't collapsed because of it. 25k isn't going to be the end of Canada. Hell, we take in 200k immigrants every year - I think we'll be fine.

  8. I'd say we need more refugees! Like that we can have Cologne style New Year party next year! http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35231046
