It's a very reductive and ultimately inaccurate way to think of mental illness - the causes are more complicated than something that can be fixed with the right pill (or pills) to "balance you out."
Make no mistake - antidepressants *can* help in certain circumstances, but they aren't a solution in themselves. Cognitive therapy, lifestyle changes, social interaction can all make different degrees of difference for different people.
The truth is, there is no surefire solution to clinical depression - just a variety of techniques that may or may not help you. But you should always seek help, regardless.
