OMG: The University of Ottawa has just banned yoga classes because some SJW complained it was "cultural appropriation". I'm still baffled that people with such a profound mental retardation are able to attend an University.

  1. Please don't use the term mental retardation. Not only has it been outlawed in a clinical sense (e.g., in the Diagnostics and Statistica Manual, it is now termed Intellectual Disability Disorder), there are much better words to use in this situation. I do agree that this does seem like a poor decision.

  2. "He (federation president Roméo Ahimakin) said they're doing consultations on the idea of bringing a free yoga class back and could get a more accessible version of it as soon as the next semester starts in January."

  4. Christ, we're doomed. University is not a "safe space". It's a place for educating first and foremost. It's also great for cultural and social exposure. What it most definitely is not is a place where your feelings are looked after by the administration.

  5. I think we might be safe given that our school spirit is actually a level of apathy most institutions cannot comprehend.

That being said all it would take is a few SJW type taking a run at feds and they probably would decide it is less effort to give them what they want rather than listening to the whining.

    1. Eh, that's more difficult/less likely than you might think. UW as a whole tends to be a pretty conservative place... or at least a more pragmatic place.

Because so many of our students have worked *actual* jobs in the real world as part of their co-op program, because so many are in technical programs, and because so many here are paying for their own education with the goal of a high return on investment after graduation, this tends not to be the sort of environment that breeds these social "radicals." Most students I've met tend to be reasonably sensitive to issues of equality, but always in a practical, forward-thinking sense.

    2. I disagree, students are much more malleable than you think. All you need is for SJWism to become the status quo and you get a positive feedback loop of (stricter, less sane SJW status quo) <--> (more student SJWs). To start this up, you just need to sensationalize some gendered issue that allows you to paint women as collective victims and men as collective perpetrators. Rape or lack of women in tech are two possibilities.

    3. We'll have to agree to disagree 5b. Mostly because I don't recognize "SJWism" as an actual ideology.

(In brief: there are plenty of ideological points of view that drive a focus on social equity. Many of these do some very, very good things. They also have extremists, who like all extreme ideologues, do very, very shitty things. If you want to brand those extremists "SJWs" then go ahead, but I think it totally unfairly co-opts the notion of 'social justice' and applies it to something that's anything but.)

And yes, students are malleable, but only within certain discursive constraints. It would take something truly appalling/far-reaching to shift the primary focus on this campus off of post-grad careers/co-op hiring/startups. But in over 50 years, nothing's managed to do that - not even for a little while, not even when we had a literal communist student newspaper on-campus back in the 60s/70s.

  6. To those who think Waterloo is immune to SJWism, remember that financing for http://wpirg.org/ is included in your student fees

    1. A $4.75 refundable fee introduced in the 1970s and not voted on via referendum in over 10 years hardly counts as "pervasive SJWism."

Think about it this way as a contrast: uOttawa pays a mandatory, non-refundable fee of ~$10/student to the CFS, just so the CFS can run campaigns that have nothing to do with student issues (like anti-Israeli protests, etc.). U of T does the same thing, costing them over $1 million in student fees every year. And getting out is basically impossible.

Then there's us. I dare you to find someone in Feds that wants us to join the CFS. We even pulled out of the one federal advocacy organization we were paying membership fees to, because Feds decided our needs weren't being represented (i.e. not enough meetings with cabinet ministers to talk about co-op jobs).

      And as a final note....

Having people on campus who care about social justice isn't some kind of disease, nor is it a slippery slope. It's not a case of "one day WPIRG is running a campaign about conditions in aboriginal communities, and the next thing you know we're shutting down Campus Bubble over cultural appropriation concerns." One does not equal the other.

    2. WPIRG lost all credibility as soon as that garbage editor started blatantly campaigning for the LPC during the recent federal election. I voted for them but fuck you and your propaganda, don't have people fund your biased garbage.

Past 2 year me and a group of friends have gone at the first opportunity to get the refundable fee back. Its pocket change to all of us but its more about the message that we don't support that filth, I'd recommend as many others do the same if possible, they aren't as brave when you show up as a group.

    3. Wow, I didn't know about WPIRG. I can't believe I've unknowingly been funding an organization that organizes anti Israel protests and calls on Waterloo to sever relations with Israeli universities. I'll be sure to get my money back from now on.

    4. Ummm, 6b, WPIRG isn't a newspaper, and it doesn't have an editor. You're thinking of the wrong organization. :p

As for that editor (of Imprint, not WPIRG), there was definitely an LPC bias coming from him, but I probably still wouldn't say the paper as a whole was 'blatantly campaigning.' That's just hyperbole.

But yeah. If you don't suppport what WPIRG does, that's totally okay. It's $4.75 - get it refunded if you want and go buy yourself a cup of coffee. I've never chosen to do it myself (I don't particularly care about what they do, and $4.75 isn't worth the effort to me), but it's your right to do so if you wish!

    3. @8b, at least Israel is a modern democratic republic not another failed Arab dictatorship. It's funny that you don't support the allies of your country, but instead you support the people who spit on your country and burn your flag.
It's cool and hip to hate Israel and the Jews, but Israel was never a threat to you. It wasn't Israel shooting people in Paris two weeks ago and it isn't Israel beheading and burning people all over the Middle East. So yeah, you're a jackass.
