OMG: I'm an international student and when I visited my home country just after finishing my software eng coop in BC, someone who doesn't know about UW told me: "too bad you couldn't just stay in there and study in a better university, they have UBC in there". I sometimes wish Waterloo ranks well on stupid rankings so that people don't judge me.

  1. UW just sucks in general.

  2. You should have just stayed in your home country. We don't want you here anyway.

    1. Hello Canadians,
I didn't know 30 million people could gather and write this delightful comment. At least, I reunited the country.

  3. We actually just ranked as the one of the top universities in Macleans Magazine, which does a comprehensive study each year of Canadian universities. You should have a look at the rankings in each category and then decide if we are a 'better' university or not

    1. In Macleans, we ranked 11th in general rankings.
We're also 200ish worldwide in QS rankings while UofT is ranked in the top 10 worldwide.

  4. Waterloo's ranked pretty high on the rankings I've seen.. I have no idea what you've been reading. In fact, what were your reasons for traveling here to study? Clearly something here was worth your trouble. Or were you rejected by UBC and want to take it out on us now?

    1. You don't get the point. I only applied to UW and UW >> UBC in my program but UBC ranks much higher in general rankings due to more reseach/funding. I would choose UW over UBC any day but it still sucks a little that people outside Canada don't realize that UW has really strong programs because UBC and UofT's brand is much more recognized.

  5. The person you were speaking to couldn't form a coherent sentence. I wouldn't put too much stock into what they said.

  6. It sounds like what you want is adulation for the university you attended. If that was so important why didn't you apply to some place with more brand recognition? "Oh i went to Harvard, Oh I went to Princeton"
No. You chose the school because you knew it would lead to a better future than others, and be proud of it, and your decision.
Don't be salty just cause noone's sucking you off for going to UW

    1. It's not that at all. It's a common thing to seek adulation for your university's name but that wasn't the case with me. If I did want that, I would have gone to one of the well known universities like UofT or UBC or one of the known universities in the UK, UW is much more selective in CS so I'm pretty sure I would've got in but I didn't want to go there. I'm aware that Waterloo doesn't have a good brand in my country but you're assuming that the only thing that comes from having a good brand is getting people to suck you off and that's not actually correct. Having a well known university on your resume would make a huge difference in my country if I decide to go back. There are lots of people who go to mediocre universities abroad because they can't get in the best local universities. As a result, if your university is not well known employers will automatically treat it as some university that sells diplomas and we know very well that it isn't the case in Waterloo.

    2. Ug. Made the mistake of attending UW for a few years. I should have stuck to my guns and went to Ivy League in the states.
