OMG: With the Federal Elections coming up, I encourage every student to take some times out of their lives to research about the news about Canadian politics. Google the news when you are taking a shit or something. Talking about politics is so voodoo these days, and I dont know why. - an engineering student.
Lets vote liberal... 5.35% interest compounded daily on your OSAP loan when the current interest rate is at 0.5%... OOPS it was the liberals who set this up like this to help us.... ANd you will tell me the Feds will be different than that provincials... UHU... SUUURE!!!

ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of perfectly valid reasons to vote conservative. Somebody isn't a bad person just because they don't share your worldview or priorities about where our nation should be headed.
DeleteThe problem is we seem to have become a society where, instead of having actual discussions about various issues and their nuances, we distill it down to a single political soundbite (spun for the intended audience) and label that stance as 'right' or 'wrong' which is basically never actually the case.
EVERY party and leader is equally guilty of this. And we as the electorate are at fault for buying in to it.
I don't love Harper - I just don't think either of the other leaders will actually do any better. And some things I think they will actively make worse.

ReplyDeleteRemember, not even die hard conservatives like Harper's policies. They still vote for him because they are die hard conservatives who have always voted conservative and cannot comprehend voting not conservative, but they still don't like his policies.
ReplyDeleteI vote Conservative because I'm a fan of Peter Braid. If I was living in almost any other riding, I might be voting Liberal (except, maybe, Calgary Nosehill - Michelle Rempel gets my vote in almost any contest). But I live in Waterloo and I want him to keep representing me.
DeleteIf one is unwilling to stand against Harper, they do not deserve a job in office. Harper is the single most hated man in the country for a reason.
DeleteI'll likely see be voting Conservative or independent. Sadly my political knowledge (unlike what you'll see a lot of in this thread) is not conclusive of Poli-Sci 101 and what I see on CBC.

DeleteWhat matters is that you recognize you're part of society, and participate in it as a full member. Voting isn't just a form of collective decision making - it's an act of community.
So essentially defer to the interests of the collective. Sorry, I just don't derive the same altruistic pleasure/pride from this that you do.
DeleteYeah... 9b, in almost every election there's always a couple candidates who win by about 20 votes or less. In 2008, KW was one of those ridings, when Peter Braid ousted the incumbent by just 17 votes.
Delete...People like you are why that happens. "He with the biggest pile of rocks, wins." But we build those piles of rocks - and we each get to choose which pile we'll add ours to. If 500 people like you decide you won't contribute to ANY pile, that can be enough to tip the scales in a direction you may not otherwise have wanted.
...Okay, I admit that sounded a little preachy, even to me. Look, you don't have to vote if you don't want to. People don't say it enough, but it's OKAY not to care how your society is governed, or who represents you in Ottawa! But if you're gonna choose not to vote, at least make that decision from an informed place. Understand what the issues are, and who your candidates are. And if after all that you can still say "I really don't care who wins this," then at least nobody can accuse you of being ignorant.
