OMG: My roommate has two intact cats which she keeps in her room and they produce about 3 litters of kittens every year. She then give these kittens away free to strangers and finds this an enjoyable process. There are so many cats sitting in shelters waiting for homes, and I have no idea why she isn't spaying and neutering her pets. (You don't need to be a genius to guess that she is an international student)

  1. Does she treat them well? As long as they aren't being mistreated, they're perfectly fine. Animals were born to mate, it's how the species goes on.

    1. Sure, but they weren't born to be sitting locked up in cages either. Which is where thousands of cats end up because their owners didn't bother to spay / neuter their pets and they keep producing litters. Three litters of kittens per year? I wonder how many of those are going to just end up in an animal shelter...

    2. As an active volunteer in animal welfare, I can tell you there are over 180,000 homeless cats and dogs that enter Canadian animal shelters annually, many of these animals are a result of overpopulation. Spaying/neutering not only reduces the number of homeless animal, it increases the quality of life of strays. A spayed/neutered pet's health and life span is proven to be better than a unspayed/neutered pet - this simple procedure significantly lowers the risk of reproductive cancers. Additionally, spaying/neutering your pet deters bad behaviour, such as territorial urine markings, aggression, and attempting to escape.

    3. 1b. THANK YOU.

Since you have experience in animal welfare, do you know if there's anything that can be done about this? I've only been living here since last September and the mother cat is already pregnant with her fourth litter.

    4. 1b here:

Well as of right now the Toronto Humane Society is offering Spay/Neuter for only $20, if your roommate is willing to make the trip its an amazing deal to get them fixed right now. Within KW, I personally recommend Westheights Vet in Kitchener. You can neuter for have your cat neutered for $75 and spayed for $150. If she's not willing to fix both, she should AT LEAST have the male neutered.

    5. ^ I'd also like to add: unfortunately, there's not really anything you yourself can do as her roommate. As long as her cats are fed and taken care of and there's no sign of neglect, they can't be taken away from her. :/

    6. Thanks for your responses. Unfortunately I think she either believes that spay/neuter harms the cats or actually enjoys raising kittens and giving them away. She is pretty adamant about keeping them intact. I guess there's nothing I can do about it then. :(

Feel free to kill me when I am asleep :)

    2. @3.a

The humane society doesn't give away cats for free. You still have to pay.

    3. 3b if you can't afford the adoption fee you can't afford to have a cat.

    1. No, seriously. I'm looking to befriend some international students. I think sampling their cuisine might be a good way to connect.

  5. Are they free-ranged kittens? Anything goes good with sweet n' sour sauce.

  7. well you're rude. It doesn't matter if she's an international student or not. If she's not harming the cats then what's it to you? Move out if you don't like this. Did you ever stop to think that it costs MONEY to spay/neuter animals? Maybe she can't afford it. STFU OP you're a judgmental human being.

    2. It's called being a responsible pet owner. If you can't afford to take care of two pets, maybe you shouldn't have them. If she can't afford to spay and neuter them, how on earth is she affording the food, vet bills, kitty litter and other things for not just two cats, but the three litters they produce a year?!

At the very least she could give one away and keep the other as a house pet if she's not going to spay / neuter. There are hundreds of abandoned cats sitting in animal shelters because people like her don't bother to get their pets spayed/neutered and then just give away the kittens if they have them. Does she keep track of where all the kittens end up? Does she take them back if the people she gives them to move / are allergic / can't keep them?

    3. She drives a Mercedes and can afford the international fees. Like 7a and 7b said if she can afford all the supplies two cats need, she can afford a spay and neuter surgery. She also has a self cleaning litter box because she's too lazy to scoop. All this points to someone who lets her pets reproduce just for the hell of it. Anyone who thinks that's acceptable should go fuck themselves.

And by the way she keeps two cats along with their kittens locked up in a 120 square feet room. Sure they get to eat and maybe get vet care, but any experienced cat owner would say wtf.
