  2. The topic pertaining to popular culture does not automatically make this a bird course. There can be infinite depth in applying sociological and psychological theory to real world case studies in a critical manner. Also, sometimes for such courses the instructors can choose to keep the average low to ward of the bird label and ensure that people who take it, take it seriously. I truly do not understand the underlying idea that certain topics are worthless to study. Do we not want people to critically assess and understand our popular culture? I understand not wanting to make this your own career, or to have many people in society making this their career, but I mean, shouldn't someone (or a few) be studying humanity in all respects?

    1. Pretentious bullshit. To give any thought of this course being meaningful is itself a joke to what post-secondary education has become. Critical thinking? Sure, why not have a course on medieval politics by studying George R. R. Martin too, maybe a whole degree? The worst part of this is that the professor is being paid with public funds to teach this tripe while other courses of actual substance will go without. I truly hope that resources are not being wasted on this crap that could be spent elsewhere like hiring more counselors and the like.

    2. @2a You are a dunce if you think that these things lack substance. Anything that we've ever studied has been part of popular culture. Plato was pop culture once, as was Dickens and Newton. Just because it's new doesn't mean that it's not worthwhile.

    3. lmao 2.b. Only you would compare Dickens or Newton to Beyonce. Lmfao. Please drop out and give someone with a brain your spot in university. You're just wasting yours.

    5. As if a PhD means anything now 2.d especially with watered-down programs such as the one in question.

  3. Studying and teaching something that you find enjoyable does not make it not academic. It's silly that people tend to think that only the classics are relevant and worth studying. Anything *good* is something that should be considered.

    2. It's true. It's a very out-dated notion that only old things are capable of brilliance. Why can nothing from the 21st century be worth study? I'm not a Beyoncé fan myself but some people are fanatics; there must be something behind her success. Why is that not an interesting study with broader applications?
