OMG: When paying fees to Waterloo, I think they should make the FEDs fee opt-in only and default students to not pay. None of my friends or myself benefit from FEDs. Just some thoughts.

  1. It's no where near as easy as that. Excluding the "paying for the benefit of the majority" argument, there's no way to enforce someone not using FED's services; i.e. not going to the bomber, not going to FEDs businesses, not joining clubs that get their funding from FEDs, not going to FEDs sponsored events, etc.

    2. @1a A good chunk of their operating budgets come out of the student fee. Places like International News attempt to offer lower prices by subsidizing part of the cost, but that cost is covered by the Feds fee.

    3. @1.c You know what would be great? If they actually told us how much the subsidy is. Im fine with subsidizing bomber, but bubble tea? I don't think so.

  3. And the moment that that happens, the students who want to opt in will be paying 3x their tuition easily.

  4. Hahaha OP you are one stupid motherfucker. If you use pretty much any service on campus you are benefiting from FEDS.

  5. Why are people so fucking stupid? Get a clue, get involved or get the fuck out.

  6. I get your reasoning, but current laws in Ontario don't allow that. You don't get to choose whether or not you belong to your student union.

Besides, before you say that you "don't benefit from Feds," you should probably get informed about what Feds actually does. It's a lot more than just events, clubs, and services, and I'd be VERY surprised if Feds has had no influence on *any* part of your time at uWaterloo.

Not to say they couldn't stand to do some things a lot better... but they are at least doing stuff, even if you don't necessarily see it.
