OMG: I'm ashamed to be at a school where there is so much vocal sexism. I thought we were supposed to be progressive. Innovative. FOR SHAME.

  3. Sexism IS innovative at academic institutions, its the thing no one does anymore, UW is just daring to be different.

  4. Waterloo is a deeply conservative institution, despite the branding.

One look at math or engineering should tell you as much.

But if you want some real insight, take a look at our gender equity committee, that decided to bring in a man for international women's week to talk about how gendered violence affects men.

Or our pro-gentrification, highly colonial school of planning.

The university administration basically has a run of the place thanks to the student body. But the student body is highly conservative itself: look at all the apathetic individuals who say "Waterloo gives us co-op and now I have a great job, you should be grateful and stop complaining." Deference to the powers-that-be is a hallmark of conservatism.

One of my favorites is the C51 protests. Turns out you can only get these kids out to a march if it's about how surveillance will start to affect white men.

It really gets to you after a while...

    1. Are you really surprised that an issue like privacy rights which affects everyone basically equally receives more diverse support than gender inequality which affects mainly women?

    2. Right because evil (redundant I know) 'white men' are the one's being surveilled.

    3. 4, "our gender equity committee, that decided to bring in a man for international women's week to talk about how gendered violence affects men."

To quote Rehtaeh Parsons' rapists' supporters' placards, "two sides to every story". So they've got to have something " for the boys".

What they really wanted to do was send someone in to say how gendered violence is hysterical imagining.

  6. And I'm sick of being at an institution whose administration cowers in front of every leftist activist and that buys into every piece of leftist 'conventional wisdom' that comes along (like the BS about women being hard done by).

    1. I agree with your first 3 words (4 technically?). The rest of your post is just evidence for those.

  7. OP it's not the vocal sexism that concerns me, it's UW's hidden systemic tolerance for sexual violence while only paying lip service to women's safety.

    1. Is this another reference to counselling services? Wow, they're on the hot seat...

    2. I bet it is. Where else than the unfixable place we go to for advice.

    4. 7c, ironies abound. Just so sick though. Can't get the help I need from there. Knowing that place now and what the people there did to one of their own. Correction, keep doing, to Dr Morgan. I searched the back story.

    5. 7d, good list. I've read parts of OMG208013 10 and 10a's indexed CS topical list.
7e, I'm starting to see what you mean though it's early in my reading.

  8. There's a difference between innovative technological progress, and changing our age-old practices to actually become socially progressive.

    1. UW trumpets the first while suppressing attempts at the second. The same upper admin staff use the same official and unofficial public relations staff for both.
