OMG: Today
I stopped by the SLC after class to get some Timmy Ho's. I ended up
going to an "oxygen bar", getting free snacks, some bubble mix, got a
free massage (!!) and got to play with some dogs (though definitely not
enough time allotted for that). I don't know why people complain about
FEDS so much.
This shit's awesome, and I've been able to get so much
free food at the SLC during the term. This is only my first semester at
Waterloo (Came from another school) so I don't know if maybe things
weren't as good before, but I definitely see Feds doing a lot of stuff
(free food, events like this) that they didn't do at my old school.
Maybe everyone who complains just never goes to the SLC? Every time i've
happened upon some of this stuff (like the monopoly game thing with
free chili at the start of the term or the free burgers in january) it
was completely by accident so maybe the people who hate feds have just
not figured out when to stop by for free food?
This reeks of a poorly-written self-promotion by the people in Feds. Listing off all the tangible accomplishments Feds has made in giving away free things to students, and then comparing themselves to some other school which isn't named to try and show how great they are and how they 'serve, empower, and represent students!'
ReplyDeleteYou are just giving all the trolls on this site more cannon-fodder.
And really, who the fuck calls it "Timmy Ho's"?
Wow, paranoia much? You have a whole lot of confidence for someone who is completely wrong. Im posting from my actual account now and you can see pretty clearly that I've only been at Waterloo for one term. I've neither worked nor volunteered for feds before and the student society I'm comparing it to is the ams at ubc. We never had any of this kind of stuff--just a start of year and end of year thing. I paid like $18 for feds at the start of the term and have definitely gotten that money back. Even just the free food days alone would amount to more than that. Do you think other schools have their student societies put on events like this?
DeleteAnd I call it Timmy ho's
inb4 OP is Maaz.
ReplyDeleteIf we didn't have feds and didn't have their stupid fee you would have the choice of not getting those things, or simply purchasing them at your discretion. Instead it's handouts to some, taxes for all
ReplyDelete"If we didn't have government and didn't have their stupid taxes you would have the choice of not getting healthcare/education, or paying for them at your discretion. Instead it's handouts for some and taxes for all."
DeleteDo you think you could afford all the stuff at the same price you're paying for it by fees? Of course not. Feds gets bulk discounts and ends up getting things on a much less costly per capita basis. If there was no feds, you wouldn't have someone to negotiate a $20/month bus pass. You'd end up paying $80/month. Still rather have the discretion of buying it on your own?
Yes because education and healthcare are comparable to getting bubble tea and a bus pass. There are some things government should be in charge of like courts, education, healthcare, roads etc. FEDS does not need to exist however.
DeleteThey spend their money on bread and circuses and tell us how lucky we are to have them. They're worthless politicians in the making. If they ran a lean operation that was cash positive every quarter then I might see a use for them, but that's not the case.
Honestly I don't give a fuck about the bus pass I use the bus because I have no choice in paying for it, but I'd rather have 20 a month back and walk.
well most of the students would disagree with you ---hence why Feds negotiated for a bus pass in the first place. the transit pass is a huge cost saver for students. measuring success in terms of cash positive every quarter is foolish, because many of the benefits are not revenue generating---you end up saving like 240/semester on bus passes, which is a huge fee to benefit ratio. yeah a few students who live on campus or closeby might be better off just paying 3$/ticket, but the majority benefits and thus it is a hugely beneficial investment on the whole.
Deleteand you say that there are things governments "should be in charge of" and mention education and healthcare in them. There are some places and people who think that those two shouldn't be managed by government and people should just pay out of pocket. so why are they wrong and you right, in this case?
students need a student society. not just for the events and such, but more importantly for things like advocacy---lobbying for tuition, for bus passes, for increased student grants, etc.
In no world was the oxygen bar as beneficial as the cost paid to have it there...
ReplyDeleteI thought Oxygen Bars were a fad from the early 2000's
ReplyDeletetbh i was underwhelmed by them. but the food and puppies were nice
DeleteFree food... wow, FEDS takes your money and gives less than 500 people free food a few times a year, what an amazing university experience. Really playing to the community of 30,000 students well there.
ReplyDeletepoor guy wanted to write about his nice experience at our school and you hooligans have to act like assholes. yeesh
ReplyDeletegirl* but yeah...people just love to find reasons to shit all over things. i paid $18 this term for these fees and have probably gotten back like $80 in terms of things, and i'm only on campus 2 days a week. it's been a good investment for me
Delete7a: no clue where you're getting $18 from, unless you're a part-time student. The FEDS fee is $48 and was just increased by another $4 at the AGM: http://www.feds.ca/about/fees-and-funding/
Delete7b: I am a part time student.
DeleteKinda shocked no one ended up having an asthma attack from the oxygen bar. Those things have at best no demonstrable effects on stress and wellbeing, and at worst can be extremely harmful (oxygen poisoning, pneumonia, lipid coating of the lungs from the added "scents")
ReplyDeleteNice try fukcin FEDS fcuikersss
ReplyDeleteLmao at all this shilling.
ReplyDeleteThis wasn't the least bit believable.
