OMG: FEDS does NOT need $5 more from me every term. That would equal about $150,000 more every year. That is insane. Can we all stop it by going to the meeting on March 25th, or is it too late?
It is not too late, they cannot move forward with the increase unless it is passed at the AGM. Bear in mind that the meeting will be totally stacked with Feds staff, so you'd need enough students to counteract that and win.
There are just over 30 Feds staff. In the past 2 years, there have been 2 or 3 General Meetings with >150 people present. Even 50 students would be enough to override the staff vote.
That $150,000 is specifically being directed, not just going into the Feds pot.
Sure marketing and communications really shouldn't be getting any more money, but what is so bad about clubs and services getting $56,400 more per year?
Why shouldn't their Marketing & Communications get more money? People complain that Fed needs to improve their communications. It's talked about every year. They're trying and you reject it? Ridic.
It is easy to assume that throwing more money at a problem will fix it, but I doubt it would work out. From the many things I hear about the Marketing and Communications department, it is the poor quality of employees and not them being overworked that makes it inefficient.
Marketing's flaws are primarily rooted in the incompetence of their staff. I don't know what the hell they're doing with the money they do have but they are not using it efficiently.
I don't know if it'll change that much but this is at least how the fee is broken down: http://www.feds.ca/home/general-meetings-motions-include-increasing-financial-support-different-areas/
It's not really a breakdown. What does the 99 cents going to IT do? Like the explanation is "students will help ensure the IT department is able to more quickly and effectively develop procedures and test new online tools. The department will have an even stronger team, and access to more resources." What does that mean?
Vote to have Maaz removed from power, it will save Feds money in the long run.
ReplyDeleteUmmm... a little late for that, considering he was already re-elected.
DeleteCan we just abolish feds.. They're almost as worthless as real governments
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, we're required to have a student union.

DeleteGet your voting blocs together....
^^Last AGM barely made quorum, and from what I hear Feds is tying to get every part-time staff member and every volunteer out this time.
DeletePart-time staff don't get votes unless they're also students.

DeleteEchoing 4b here. Feds' communication issues do NOT stem from a lack of financial resources.
DeleteI don't know if this makes it better or worse but I'm pretty sure about $33,000 of that will be going to a new WalkSafe program, not to clubs.

DeleteTo echo everyone else, the issue is that Feds Marketing is incompetent... not that they're underfunded (if anything they are OVERFUNDED).

Delete5a, it basically means they'll upgrade the servers and hire another full-time staffer to work in the department.
DeleteBecause throwing more money at marketing is going to make it better.
DeleteIt's more like $250 000 extra a year... The fee increase is per term, not year.
