Because our primary focus is undergraduate education and teaching skills to kids that get them the best jobs. That isn't a trait admired by the people responsible for doing the rankings. They care about a university's pure research in both sciences and arts. UW simply does not put in significant funds to do quality research, so we have a low ranking. All that really means is that if your plan is academia, you're better off with McGill or U of T.
we dont have a medical school, business school or law school. we are only known for engineering and math/computer science. its hard to carry an entire school based on two faculties. Even most of our engineering programs arent the best in canada: most of the research money goes to the more established schools like U of T, McGill and even UBC,
I think part of it too is that the atmosphere isn't great. Co-op is great, but as a result I think a lot of people don't really have much affiliation for the school. A semester is so short and most people are so busy the time comes and goes in no time. Everyone is a transient. There are three kinds of people at Waterloo...1) single co-op students that are close to their class, 2) students in a relationship with someone they met in frosh week (every other fool didn't realize that after week 2 their options fall to zero) and 3) everyone else, shuffling about, taking courses, and wondering if they'll ever get a fkn date (much less get beyond that). I've made some good friends here for sure but honestly it's just not a great place to go.
I agree that not having a medical, business, or law school counts against Waterloo.
Why do people put so much stock in rankings? Why does it matter so much?
ReplyDeletebcos it will be among the first thing people consult to when they want to know how good Waterloo is.

Since insulting you is just too easy I'll just say you're not right and move along.
DeleteCause your doge meme ain't dank.
ReplyDeleteToo many resources spent on recruiting undergrads...your the reason rankings are low
ReplyDeleteFor someone who doesn't know the correct form of 'you're' I can see these resources are squandered.
DeleteI was waiting to see who would pick up on this typo...usually that's the best people can do on this site
ReplyDeletelol
weak retort. i'll give you 2/10. you need to try harder.
DeleteI don't see anyone disagreeing with my point so there is really no need to retort...particularly not on an anonymous OMGUW thread
