OMG: Ok, preliminary rundown of the candidates.

Gold
Chris - more experience than his opposition combined, but I worry that most students don’t understand what he wants to accomplish (but his goals are very good)
Stephane - he knows his job well, but his platform is a little weak for an incumbent
Carly - wants to see big change with Feds. Not sure if she has experience or the knowledge to get it done
Matt - really unique way of looking at the portfolio. Except he's left out a lot of the typical vpin stuff

Fusion
Paula - who? Platform is weak. She identifies some problems, but doesn’t actually pose solutions. I guess she'll get the SJ vote though
Ben - certainly knows the job better than last year (when he didn't at all), except he's made quite a few mistakes these past few months. MappedIN will hurt him
Maaz - he's good to work with if he likes your service, but he's left some areas of his portfolio lacking
They should have a vped. How do you not have a vped and want to be considered the best team?

Purple Crush
Baiju - is he really taking this seriously? If he is, he reminds me too much of Collins (popular frat guy w/o experience) to get my vote
Mike - wish he were running on a better team, because I think he is a good fit for vpin from what I know of him.

Independents
Jessica - Typical Feds-hate candidate. Don't take seriously
David - It's David Fuckin' Birnbaum

tl;dr My prelim ballot would look like
Pres: Chris
VPED: Stephane
VPOF: Ben
VPIN: Mike/Maaz/Matt all decent choices
Remember this is a preliminary ballot. I fully expect things to change, especially if Carly can back up her ideas.

  1. Gold is clearly the best team.

I don't think she has the experience, but she certainly has the knowledge and the capability to get the change done. She is very personable too and works well with people (from what I saw of her a while ago) which is pretty important for a VPOF. Like I said though, very little experience and that is probably going to mean she'll have a steep learning curve.

  2. Please clarify on the "David Fuckin' Birnbaum" point.

    1. He is a controversial figure in EngSoc, which earned him the nickname "David Fucking Birnbaum". I think the point is just that he is so controversial.

    2. I'm b-soc, you'd have to fill me in on what he did :(

    3. Doesn't take shit from anyone, can be hard to work with, but gets stuff done.

    1. ??? OP was critical of everyone. And is supporting Ben. And is undecided on VPIN. This is clearly not a pro-gold post.

    2. @4a You do know how to read, right?

2/4 - 3/4 of the candidates OP was saying positive things about were Team Gold

  5. OP here, I want to clarify that I'm not pro-Gold. As I said this is just preliminary musings. The two votes I'm most confident in, however, are Stephane and Chris. I'm leaning Ben right now, but I can see Carly taking it. And Mike/Maaz/Matt are all good choices imo. I'll post an updated version later into campaigning.

    2. 5a, I don't care if you're trolling but your comment is neither "ironically funny" nor "subversive" nor "hilarious". You're really disgusting and I hope that you none of the women in your own life (Mom, girlfriend, sister, friend) ever receive comments like this on the internet.

Carly, if you're reading this, know that there are a large number of people who will continue to support you and won't stand for shit like this.

    3. WOW 5a could you have waited ONE. FUCKING. DAY. before you had to begin your bloody onslaught of sexist bullshit? Second post I read on FEDS elections and we've already succeeded at reducing a female candidate to a piece of meat you want to wave your goddamned dick at.

      Just. No.

    4. You care THIS MUCH about some stupid meaningless election, and THISF MUCH about some silly dick joke.

Seriously, you guys need to grow up, evaluate your lives, and get your priorities in order.

    5. Well 5.d, if you take a step away from your dramatic and overly negative perspective and investigate things from an unbiased standpoint, I'm confident you'll notice two things, because I used to feel the same way you do atm:

One, even though you may feel that Feds has no impact, the reality is that Feds is pretty much the only source of empowered student voice on campus (with a significant budget), and without it we would actually have zero impact on how things go. By deciding without knowledge that something is useless, you're effectively participating towards rendering it useless. When the student voice is organized and rallied towards goals that cater to the student body (via things like well-supported platforms or nearly unanimous referendums) , we can cause significant changes for the better. There are plenty of things Feds does for you (some are already mentioned in this thread) and plenty of them are recent changes.

It matters. And calm analysis from people like you--people who want to share their opinion regardless of what they think other people think--are exactly what Feds needs and is. Just don't give up on the whole process so easily--or, if you don't wish to participate, simply do so but don't spread a negative attitude where people are making the world a better place.

Two, you'll realize that when you have something meaningless and possibly offensive to say and you don't know if someone is comfortable with what you're saying, you shouldn't say it out of respect. A joke isn't a catch-all excuse to say offensive things--you have to be funny about it. And funny and comfort go hand in hand. A comment like that sucks because you'd be giving someone's appearance more attention than their words, right when they're trying to start a conversation with you about the future of our school. Don't forget to treat people how you want to be treated, that goodness comes back.

      - Sincerely, Anon

  6. You guys are fucking pathetic with how much you care about these meaningless pretend politics.

I guarantee nothing would be different in my day-to-day school life if we elected a bunch of manatees to "office."

    1. you could have lost your GRT UPASS, health and dental insurance, university can make any decision without consulting students, you may not have any leisure clubs to join because Feds organise these clubs, no first aid crew in university events since CRT is under Feds, oh, and no concert and no non-academic events on campus either since they are all organised by Waterloo Team Feds, can't find a study space on campus? because there's no student union that lobby university for more study space, you have prof that can't teach? bcos university only cares about their research and don't give a shit if they can teach or not. why you don't feel any difference because those people do their jobs, doesn't mean that you have to take them for granted.

    2. Not to mention the potential de-creditation of engineering that almost happened at the last senate meeting, the active work towards getting rid of food services monopoly, the support of student societies and clubs, etc

      Delete
  7. Except no team would get rid of the upass, no team would get rid of insurance, etc.

University CAN make any decision anyway because, you know, this is PRETEND POLITICS.

I'll take them for granted, they are even more useless than real politicians. This is literally just so they can have it as a line on their resume.

    1. Actually, you probably should care because they are spending tens of millions in your money.

      Delete
    2. except UPASS was negotiated by Feds exec long time ago, which means that without Feds' existence, there wouldn't have been UPASS.

except that you think it's pretend politics because whoever got elected will do great job that you, current and future students can benefit from, like UPASS.

Well fuck you, people should be able to comment whatever they want.

    3. Yeah... I thought 5a was at least somewhat amusing (even if it was a joke told in bad taste), but 8 was straight-up creepy, over-the-line shit.
