OMG: Imagine how much more study space there could be if all the books no one uses in DP were removed

  1. It's a library. It's for storing books. If you don't like the books then get the hell out of the library.

  2. I wouldn't mind a big hall filled with desks/cubicles for studying.

...But that would have to be separate from the library.

  3. The library is looking at moving more books offsite, the long term possibility of building another annex(current annex : http://tug.lib.uwaterloo.ca/info/annex/) and continuing to continue to leverage the partnership with Laurier and Guelph to increase study space.

From discussions with the Deans many of them would be okay with them being moved off site as long as they are accessible within a day(which they currently are with the trellis system). It's a long term project, books are still considered necessary for research.

  4. It's a library for gosh sakes! Books are kind of its thing. Push for another building with study space; don't kill the library. Sheesh.

  6. It would be cool if they had a floor or two of those moving shelves for books that are rarely used. Those shelves are much more efficient and all the books are still accessible without special permissions or requesting them. All you would have to do is find the row you want, spin a few wheels, lock the shelves so no one crushes you, grab your book, and then go to the tables in the middle reserved for people with books from that floor.

    1. Or you know... we could have a system that has been in place in almost every modern university where motion sensors prevent shelves from moving and pressing a button automatically shifts the shelves?

Jesus Christ... spinning a few wheels to move shelves? What the fuck is this, the fucking middle ages?

  7. Everything published modern should be digital. Stuff that can't be digitized should be stored in a Warehouse, and picked by a robot when needed.

    1. Most modern books ARE available digitally. That still doesn't negate the usefulness of actual printed media.

    2. A robot like a book bot used at this library - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftxl5OaURy8
Probably too expensive to implement here, but a neat idea.

    3. Sorry kids. No modernizing anything at this university. We need all of your inflated tuition fees to go to a bloated administration lead by overpaid, incompetent management. Where do you think you are? MIT?

  8. If you can't find a study spot, just study somewhere else...
