OMG: i'm in my first year of engineering and i failed the elpe exam. I feel so ashamed and horrible because other people I know passed the exam and I also have to add an extra course to my six courses next semester. I think I'm loosing it.What should I do?

  1. Are you a native English speaker? If not, I'm sure a lot of others have had a hard time adjusting to the language and becoming proficient at it. Just put some more effort into it, and it'll come out alright.

Having more than 50 mins to write an essay can do you wonders

  3. I think you'd be surprised at some of the people who don't pass it the first time. Just re-write it next term and you'll be fine.

seriously though, it's ELPE that's stupid, not you.

  5. I would try to rewrite first before adding an extra course. Also, you always take an english course online during a Co-op if you fail again.

  6. People fail their LPs all the time, OP. Seriously. Telling you not to worry about it is probably not going to help you in any way, but it's really a small thing in the greater scheme of things!

  8. Math just got rid of ELPE cause it's such a bad indicator of language proficiency.

  9. Losing it, not loosing it. People need to stop blaming the “stupid” test and start assessing their proficiency in the English language.

  10. It's funny that people say the ELPE is not a good indicator of English proficiency, but then their comment is full of spelling and grammatical errors lol.

    1. I don't think you should evaluate someone's writing skills by a web forum post.

That said, I also don't think the ELPE is a good way to evaluate English proficiency either. Which is why Math dropped it, and is also why the university has been, for some time, investigating alternatives to the ELPE. The test simply doesn't do what it is intended to do, for various reasons.

  11. 10 here. I would tend to agree with most of what you said. Although, if someone is trying to improve their language proficiency, then they may be well advised to practice good grammar and spelling at all times. Just saying.

  12. Why not do IELTS or TOEFL instead?

  13. Dude, I'm almost graduating and I haven't done mine. I failed a time or two, NO idea how. I can still do it Winter, don't sweat it.

  14. I have had friends fail because they forgot the title even though the whole thing was written well. Apparently they have poor English compared to some horribly written assignments I have read from people who passed.
