OMG: To the person putting up the "WARNING: Reflections in this mirror may be distorted by socially constructed ideas of 'beauty'" mirrors all over campus, you are awesome. Thank-you.

    1. No it wasn't. It was not an official act by The Women's Centre.

  2. Fucking stupid.

What I find beautiful isn't a "social construct", its what biologically seems healthy to my instincts.

If you need a message on a mirror to convince yourself youre beautiful, hit the fucking gym or something

    1. 2, your reasoning makes sense, but is also flawed.

The problem is, there are plenty of perfectly healthy, fit, gorgeous women out there who *do* look in the mirror and are convinced they're hopelessly unattractive, because they don't measure up to the standards that are... well, social constructs. These standards are set by things like fashion magazines, which use all sorts of photography techniques and ridiculous, health-destroying dietary regimes to present images which are unrealistic and unattainable - but are often perceived as 'beautiful' by today's world.

    2. Yeahhh, you would like to think you formed your opinions independently without influence from society, but you didn't. You didn't grow up in a fucking vacuum. What is considered "beautiful" differs from culture to culture and differs throughout history. It isn't ingrained in biology.

Now go take some arts courses.

  4. I think a lot of people look in the mirror and see everything that is wrong with them instead of reality. Men and women with eating disorders see a morphed image of themselves for example. In this case, that message is great.

Also, societal norms do distort men and women's realities. Human being aren't running on biological instincts because of our unique ability to think beyond.

  5. Meh, I think things like this are a bit ridiculous. Some people are not as good looking as others. You just have to accept it and move on.
