OMG: A girl died last week from hiding under a tree during a lightning storm, but yesterday I saw a whole bunch of people across campus doing exactly this to shelter themselves from the rain.
What gives, Waterloo? Use your fucking head, if it happened once already this week, that should probably be your cue to NOT FREAKING DO EXACTLY THE SAME FUCKING THING.

ReplyDeleteOntario has about 10 or 12 lightning-related deaths a year. Yes, hiding under a tree during a lightning storm would serve to increase your odds of joining that group, but 5 is correct: the odds of another UW student being struck by lightning in the immediate future are very low. Unless they fashion a kite out of discarded O-Week tshirts, tie a key to it, and go flying during a storm.

Delete^ As a member of the general population, yeah, same odds. As a member of the population that seeks shelter under trees during lightning storms, different odds. Statistics and probabilities don't tell the whole truth, especially when you don't take conditions into account.

Trees are actually excellent electric conductors so never stand near one during a lightning storm. If there's only a rain storm, who cares.
