yo, what are you guys going to do? Are you guys going to stay at a hotel? Can we even fight this legally? I want to talk to others in the same situation as I am to see if there is something we can do.
But what benefit can we even get from fighting it legally? Could we oust Schembri from the student residence business by doing so? I think they're trying to play with loopholes right now. They're sending out emails to "transfer leases" to one of the other buildings that they manage. I don't know if we could even take legal action once the lease transfer takes effect.
I still have doubts about 1 Columbia even if they say it won't be ready for a while. They seem to be rushing the construction work. How safe could it be? They better not rush safety inspections too or else we might hear of unfortunate injuries/deaths that could have been avoided.I'm so angry with Schembri right now. It was really unprofessional of them to tell us last minute.
It's really unfortunate that they have to rush everything. Even the windows!!! I mean that means there's still a long way to go. That would have been a really cool building
Off Campus Housing is hosting an info session on this led by Waterloo Legal Services. Bring your lease agreement. Thursday, Sept. 4 at 11:30am in SLC 2143.
Nice! Go to this guys! If you signed something with one of these companies there's usually a loophole on there for them because they're dicks but on the off chance that they don't this is really worth it.
Hopefully the management company is paying for the hotels? if not first contact CTV news and the Waterloo record as they might be interested and secondly a landlord and tenant lawyer. Construction delays happen and there is not much that can be done about it but the hotels need to be fully covered and the management company can they claim it back from the builder or the insurance or even other contractors involved.
Discussions about this have been taken off of Facebook and the uwaterloo subreddit. I think it's ridiculous, how can it be libellous if its true? Anyway, I hope the students affected take this company to task if they can.
If that's the apartment they're building across from the McDonalds, it was really obvious by August and even July that it was taking too long.
ReplyDeleteThis is why you don't sign leases for buildings that still have a crane attached to them.
Or why you don't sign leases with Schembri at all, period.

ReplyDeleteYou can fight this legally- its a breach of contract.
ReplyDeleteSadly, that doesn't solve the more immediate problem of needing somewhere to live....
DeleteI thought just the upper floors had problems
ReplyDeleteI wanted to get a pent house, but they said it won't be ready until October..

ReplyDeleteHow many students are affected by this?
ReplyDeleteIt's obviously quite a number of students. Considering how big the building is and there are about 22 floors. And I know that they are fully occupied
DeleteTheir site still says "renting for September 2014". http://www.schembripm.com/rentallisting_detail.php?id=9&rental_property=1%20Columbia&city=Waterloo

DeleteAre you guys being reimbursed for the months you're not occupying the building or the hotel/temporary housing costs?
