I wouldn't recommend taking it if you don't plan on doing any labwork/research after you graduate. While it does an excellent job of teaching you every kind of lab method in great detail, the course itself is extremely challenging and applied.
While it is very much about application and you have to remember the little details, it's really not a hard course in terms of the content. It is not difficult to grasp; you just need to understand the lab procedures, etc. that are taught.
This was one of my favourite BIOL course... and I'm not going into research. Also got over 90 so it's definitely do-able. I thought it was a lot less work than 308 in terms of content but same level of difficulty.
It was very difficult; not in terms of the content, but in terms of how she tests you. There is far too much material taken from journal articles, online videos, and other crap like that. The textbook does NOT go into the amount of detail she expects you to know. A lot of the course is "guessing your way through"... It's alright if you're a research nerd, and have spent a significant amount of time sweating in a lab... otherwise, avoid it at all costs.
I'd say stick with it if you're interested in the content and like to apply yourself -- it's one of my favourite biology classes I've taken (I'm in biochem)! People who struggled in the class are probably just students who are better at learning and memorizing lots of info than they are at actually applying the material and methods they've learned.
I got 89 and my friends got over 90. Actually one of them got 100. If you've enrolled in it out of interest then just do it. Just bc some ppl do poorly doesn't mean that you will, vice versa as well. But as with almost any course, it is possible to do well.
Got 93%, and not even close to being smart. Prof. Moffett is intense at times but she's one of those rare profs that want to help you. Go to class and participate and you'll do fine
Serious Response here. I am enrolled in it to get a biol minor, should I switch to something else?

DeleteHow does this compare to BIOL308?

ReplyDelete308 was much easier compared to 309.
ReplyDeleteI got 95+ and I'm no genius. Requires problem solving using the info you're taught to show if you actually understand the functions of each procedure.
