That doesn't justify you being an entitled little shit. Not having humility in spite of your successes reflects on your immaturity. You aren't better than anyone for "working really fucking hard to be who you are", so you should stop thinking that you are. You're not better or worse than anyone, you're just like everyone.
3a +2. I chalk it up to the way we've been raised in an institutional setting, and how much many people were completely fucking coddled in the name of self-esteem. Every child is told they're awesome. No one can win because that means that someone has to lose. Awards being distributed "fairly" and not on merit. Grades based on effort. Probably an unpopular opinion here but I find athletes to be some of the most well adjusted in our generation. Not necessarily the elite ones that have the "all that" mentality, but those that have "worked really fucking hard" for something and still lost, still gotten cut.
"... people were completely fucking coddled in the name of self-esteem. Every child is told they're awesome. No one can win because that means that someone has to lose."
Are you delusional? Does everyone get 100%? No. Does everyone get a scholarship? No. Does everyone get accepted into the program they want to get into? No. Does everyone get the job they want? No. Since when has everything been spread out equally "in the name of self-esteem"?
"Awards being distributed 'fairly' and not on merit. Grades based on effort."
Ha, grades based on effort? I wish! It's not like a marker or scantron machine can tell who put in how much effort just by looking at someone's answers.
Ah yes, we are such entitled little shits for hoping, wishing, for our tremendous efforts to be recognized after the previous generations left us such a fucked-up socioeconomical world to live in.
Were were we all raised in University? No. Is this the extent of our human experience? No.
The topic is why IS our generation so entitled these days? If you took a moment to apply a little context you'd realize we're likely talking about the attitudes of current students in current situations. Then if you made the tiniest of intuitive leaps you'd realize I was talking about youth education and child development. You know, discussing the "why."
This is satirical, but like all satire has a very solid grounding in truth. Kids are being coddled. The fact that you see 100% and scholarships as the thresholds for success kinda illustrates that no? http://www.cbc.ca/thisisthat/blog/2013/09/03/to-ensure-every-child-wins-ontario-athletic-association-removes-ball-from-soccer/
All those examples you listed are true. That's just reality. The problem -at least to my thinking- is that many students at UW and other post-secondary institutions are ill equipped to deal with those realities. I'm saying that growing up we were sheltered from failure to an unhealthy degree, resulting in everything you listed seeming "unfair" to some. Now I know that this is all a generalization, but it holds true to a large degree. So many times I've seen people work hard on an assignment, study hard for an exam, and think that doing so means that they should get an 80. "I'm me, I put the time in, now give me my A." When it doesn't happen the only conclusion is that the marker was being unfair, or the test was too hard.
And 3.d.... A for effort, solid C- on the execution
and 3g its not the "hoping and wishing," its the being unable to accept that sometimes "our tremendous effort" just isn't good enough. You don't think that I've worked hard for something and not gotten it? It can be crushing, but it doesn't mean you bitch about it. Learn from in and move on.
OP = faggot
ReplyDeleteBecause we all grew up believing we were smart
ReplyDeleteSome believing, some knowing.

All I see is that people think they are entitled to be entitled or massive self-pity on this thread.
