OMG: To the kids who recently got into engineering, if you're in a non-conventional sounding program like Mechatronics, Nanotechnology etc..run...run before its too late.

  1. It is what you make of it tbh. People in my nano class have landed jobs at Facebook, AMD, Apple, and even doing business consulting. Yes nano is mostly about research, and yes, you're probably going to (want to) go to grad school (and further) if you're in nano right now. MIT/Harvard hires nano students for research jobs and they normally are happy with the performances. Yes the pay is shit, that is one thing you would have to stick with. If you EXPECT to get a well paying job while actually staying in nanotechnology, then yea I agree, run while you can.

I don't know wtf you're on about tron though. I was under the impression that they get hired really quickly.

    1. The only nano-related jobs are for research positions at MIT/Harvard. Only about 4 of those kind of positions are open each term. The rest do software or hardware jobs at tech companies.

  2. Yeah, Nano isn't a practical undergrad program, but Tron? It's basically mechanical + electrical. If you want to deal with robotics it seems like one of the best options.

    1. There are NEVER any jobs that will require you to use all the knowledge at once.

  3. That is bull, if you know what you are getting into then you will love the program.

They are not something for people who want to graduate and find a cushy position as a computer jockey at a place like sun cor or hatch, they are programs for people who want to risk being on the cutting edge. Or want to get into research with more marketable skills than a BS will give them.

  4. Nah.

Tron kids get plenty of jobs. And the reason Nanos have trouble is because of lack of undergrad-level jobs in the field, not because of the program's name.

    1. And it's Tesla, so they'll reap your souls for $11.89 per hour!

    2. Heard they got a lot better now - it's an amazing $18 an hour!

  8. Maybe pick the program based on what you're interested in studying, rather than thinking about the jobs you might get in 5 years? If you truly love what you're studying, you'll find ways to make it work out for you. If you're taking a program for its prestige, you'll end up nowhere.

Personally something like Civil would be boring as fuck for me... even if I knew I'd be getting a good job.
