I think she just needs to find friends that are not assholes. In general the people working on their latest app and bragging about their job at Google are not fun to be around. Make friends with people in ECE, and embedded systems people, they seems a lot more knowledgeable and humble. To say every person in CS is always talking about this type of thing is just dumb.
I think in terms of programming, SE/CS/CE people into harder programming (embedded, HDLs, systems) are generally more humble than those who are into scripting/high level/apps, who tend to be more show off-y.
My exes weren't assholes... they made it official with me... And it's not what it seems . There's nothing wrong with ECE... My mom's majored in that and one day I will be one too. I'm planning to teach piano at home...
I got into the child and youth worker program and Luarier... And i'll be getting my indie certificate at Ryerson... Both my parents will be proud of me...
I second that.. Though I guess that just goes to show how strong the need is to showcase work, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that, as long as it's in good faith.
While I agree with the article as a whole I believe this line should be striked out or at least reworded: "Online groups for incoming frosh are filled with people showcasing their apps and intimidating their peers." It currently sounds like the author is against showcasing apps but does so herself.
I don't get why people think they are entitled to "support" when they fail. If you fail, you fail. Get over it. No one is going to hold your hand in this world so you'd better get used to it and stop acting so entitled.
Fuck society and its arbitrary notions of failure. And fuck unempathetic assholes like you. You've probably had it so good in your life you can't even imagine what it's like to fail, so those words come pretty easily. I suspect your tune would change if you were ever down on your luck.
What's that? The article decried the lack of empathy on campus and you went ahead and illustrated it, showing how toxic it is? How fitting!
Why do you think they have no empathy? Most CS students, a lot of engineering students, and many students from other faculties at UW are straight up sociopaths.
4a, I don't think 4 is being completely unempathetic - just realistic. Admittedly, he/she is doing so in a broad/sweeping sense that is unjustified.
4 - the point is to make sure someone's failure wasn't due to circumstances beyond their control (like mental health issues). The same way you get accommodated if you miss an exam because you have the flu, those whose ability to succeed is impacted by mental health problems deserve accommodation, too.
Nobody is suggesting that "failure in spite of one's best efforts," or "failure because someone was stupid and screwed up" ought to be accommodated.
Thanks for telling me little Asian chick. CS majors are pretty hoot. I was hoping to major in accounting at UW with my x-best friend... got kinda sad that I couldn't... hence the low self-esteem
Lol usually I encourage people's advancement towards their career. But you are right she speaks as if she is the queen bee of her program, but clearly not since no cali on profile for a CS major.
You guys are either trolling or stupid. Hopefully the former, but probably the latter.
She is talking about pretentious idiots like you - people who judge others by whether they've worked at "Cali" or not.
"this person starts right off by talking about themselves like they're something" You mean calling herself diligent but not enough? Wow, so arrogant...
I wouldn't say a must read. Most things mentioned were good to know but I felt a lot of things mentioned weren't really that generally applicable.

Kind of lost me at the end by promoting your app.. bit contradictory there.

I can't handle the pressure of competing with girls : ( : ( :'(
ReplyDeleteWhy is it more pressure competing with girls than boys?
DeleteBecause girls have sex appeal.

Just checked her LinkedIn and she hasn't even broke Cali yet. Her misplaced sense of self-worth is hilarious.
