OMG: Today a random person walked up to me on campus and asked me a series of technical questions about their degree program. I had my laptop, so I pulled open the website and we walked through everything.

Then I realized: if I'm willing to be that helpful to a stranger, maybe other strangers would be willing to help me? I usually assume that everyone would be nonreceptive if I approached them out of the blue. Am I wrong?

  1. I'll help. unless you ask me as I'm running to get to my exam location (i'm usually just on time for these things).

  2. I will help people if they are polite and respectful about it. I can only think of a handful of times where I have turned someone down outright.

Besides, helping others is a great way to build up a network on campus. You never know when you might be stuck at the side of the road with a flat and run into someone willing to lend a hand thanks to a previous favour.

  5. You're not wrong (or maybe only a little bit wrong). Likely there's a distribution and you're on the nice end of the distribution.
