OMG: In full sincerity, what sort of non math/engineering students study at Waterloo? I actually don't consider those soft faculties ever; how do those people react to math students?
I believe OP was saying he doesn't consider that non-math/non-engineering faculties are "soft". OP: if you were asking with the sincere intention of making friends outside your faculty, don't worry - they're friendly! Just don't be arrogant because of your faculty and everyone else is down to make friends.
Believe it or not, Waterloo actually has an awesome psychology faculty to boot. I'm always really impressed with quality of teaching and research in my psych classes.
I really don't understand why math/eng people are so full of themselves sometimes. I'm in Science, but I could've easily been admitted to any math program and most Eng programs if not all. I just chose Science because I enjoy it and I like Waterloo. Don't think you're better than everyone, we all have different stories. I honestly respect an Arts kids following their dream, more than some eng/math kid just doing for money/parents.
Not all the people in math and engineering will make money. There are 50-60% of people below 70 in these programs, chances are they are shit at what they do.
The only people that are gonna do well, are those that are doing good in the program, and the people that are truly doing good for themselves don't boast about their achievements.
So the next time you run into a boastful math/engineering kid, be assured he is one of the idiots of the faculty, and don't judge us all because of it.
13 here, I don't mean to offend anyone with my comment. I'm just trying to show some people that being in another faculty doesnt make anyone less worthy than you. I'm not dumb or "soft", I just dont like eng or math. #sorrynotsorry
@13a) Double Degrees do pretty much the exact same degree all math kids do (Just with two extra terms and a business degree for breadth requirements), and math at UW is anything but all computational. If it was, I'd be doing better.
Oh my lord, another one of those "applied math isn't real math" people. Forget Eng&Math vs everyone else, this is the snottiest form of condescension.
Applied Math courses are fundamentally different from "pure" math that focus on proofs, but it doesn't make either of them less "real" maths or less difficult. Pure Mathies get to explore the unknown in a perfect proof world. Applied Mathies fight a constant battle with the random in the real world. None is any worse than the other, and trying to draw the line in the sand is just stupid.
What you mean by "sort" of people... do you mean the programs that people are in or the types of people they are or something else altogether?
I'm in ARBUS co-op with an Econ/RPW joint honours. In terms of reactions to the math/engineering faculties... I don't know. I don't think I really care about faculty labels to be honest, and in a meaningful connection or friendship, I don't think they should matter. Yeah, it helps meeting people who share your classes and such, but imo those really great relationships come in still being able to talk and laugh about stuff even when your academic lives don't overlap (unless that's something you really value-- then definitely seek friendships with people who share your values!).
Mathie here. I've gotten really sick of people bashing other faculties. People in my faculty are constantly saying that Arts kids could never handle the stuff we do and the multiple weekly assignments. But I could also never do what the kids in Arts do -- essays, reports, case studies, and a metric shit ton of reading.
I'm in Math because it's what I love to learn about. That's it.
To the people who condescend upon condescending people... you too are condescending, not only to the condescending people below you, but also to the victims of the condescension of the people that were orignaly being condescended upon.
Science isnt soft...
ReplyDeleteYeah it is.
DeleteI'm in science
ReplyDelete" what sort of non math/engineering students study at Waterloo?"
ReplyDeletehttps://uwaterloo.ca/find-out-more/programs
Only those who want the best Kinesiology program in Canada. Or at least study from the oldest Kin program.
ReplyDeleteThere's AFM, Kin, Architecture, Optometry...dude leave your little bubble. These aren't "soft" faculties
ReplyDeleteafm is soft
DeleteWhen OP writes like that, it's no wonder why "soft faculties" hate mathies/engineers.
ReplyDeleteLol he is doing it to get attention, and also math faculty is anything but hard
ReplyDeletePeople who grew up in the Kitchener/Waterloo area??? Not everyone is going to go into Engineering/Math.
ReplyDeleteSo people who grew up outside KW and aren't in Eng/Math are soft?
DeleteI believe OP was saying he doesn't consider that non-math/non-engineering faculties are "soft". ReplyDeleteshut the fuck up
DeleteThey react poorly to being called 'soft'.
ReplyDeleteCompared to engineering math is just as soft as science.
ReplyDeleteAs a current TRON student who already got a science degree (chem)....engineering is way easier lol
DeleteThere is more work in engineering but the actual concepts are a joke
As a math student, I can confirm that engineering is the softer if you take advanced classes.

ReplyDeletethey shouldn't be
Deletei've met people from double degree who think they're the shit, but when i look at the stuff they do it's all computational bullshit
everyone needs to know there's worlds out there they've never even dreamt of

+1, me and most of my friends in Science also got accepted into Eng
Delete@13b: Yeah, because being successful at academics in school is directly correlated to being successful in the workplace, right?
Delete13b here: Yea kinda, you cant get into my field upon graduation if you dont have a minimum 3.7 gpa
Delete13 here, I don't mean to offend anyone with my comment. I'm just trying to show some people that being in another faculty doesnt make anyone less worthy than you. I'm not dumb or "soft", I just dont like eng or math. #sorrynotsorry

Delete@ 13g
Deleteyes, but it depends on the math degree they choose
most choose some applied field and call it a day
neither did i say the regular kids don't do computational stuff
in fact, most applied stuff IS computational - just because you're manipulating symbols doesn't mean it's all of a sudden deeper

I have no idea if that answers your question.
Geomatics isn't soft, less than 50% retention rate, not to mention all of the Math and CS we take.

ReplyDeleteTake that in and get back to me
they need not be condescending just because they point out that condescending people aren't good to associate with or any of the other flaws
Deletedressing your point up in some flowery meta bs doesn't make it deep lol
