OMG: Is there alot of racism at Waterloo? I'm going to be starting in fall and I'm a minority at waterloo i guess, black. I had a pretty rough childhood with it living in predominantly white neighborhoods. High school i didn't really give a fuck except when passing by Georgetown. I just wanna know if i should prepare myself to pretend to not give any fucks.

  1. Most racism that I've seen is usually directed towards brown people

  2. Don't worry, I'm a minority at Waterloo too (white) and the people here are really accepting.

I'm excited to see some more people of shades next term!

    1. I, too, look forward to a more diverse campus experience free of hate, racism, water bottles, and non-recyclable bags ;)

    2. 2a WTF are you talking about

No one understands your winky face

    3. @2b, I think 2a is just being a cunt. Obviously water bottles and non-recyclable bags are going to be on campus in the Fall, just like racism and hate. The wink is because optimism in place of reality is foolish

  3. A lot of the racism that is apparent on this website is, at least I think, mostly trolling. If you actually interacted with anybody here in real life, I doubt they'd act the same.

I THINK (I'm white, so I don't have much experience at being discriminated against) that you should be pretty much okay. I don't really see any straight-up, in your face bigotry between people around here. I wouldn't worry a tonne about it. It certainly won't get in the way of you finding a group of people and a place that you feel comfortable, safe and at home.

    1. +1, I don't think there is much racism against black people here, just Asians.

    2. Don't get me started on black asians

      Delete
    3. Really though, most of the racism come FROM Asians

    4. Confirmed, am asian and am racist against fobs

  5. Everywhere is racist. Waterloo is one of the most conservative schools in Canada so it's particularly racist.

Black friend of mine has complained about this :(

  6. I don't believe you have much to worry about as a black guy. There are one or two in my class and they have good friend groups. In fact I don;t think I know anyone smiley-er than the African guy in our class; he rocks.

As real waterloo minority, a white fellow, I say to you, welcome and be fruitful.

  7. To the people who say asians are most discriminated against, or brown people are the most discriminated against, I have to disagree.

Waterloo as a campus is generally not racist. You see multiracial friend groups all the time. If anything we're xenophobic. (basically an aversion to FOBs)

I have found myself complaining about the loud brown guys in the libraries/engineering computer labs on numerous occasions. I've also complained about the asians who play video games, talk loudly, and eat nasty smelling shit in the library. But you'll notice its almost always the FOBs. Doesn't matter what their race is. They're just people who haven't yet assimilated/realized what is appropriate in our culture.

You'll be fine as a Canadian raised black guy.

    1. ^This. Waterloo is generally not racist. I don't know if I'd call it Xenophobia though.

I feel like the group of people that gets the most slack are FOBs/international students who don't have a clue. There are people who are very rude, inconsiderate, flashy with money (if applicable), buy marks/prohibited materials and excessive cheating. It just happens that those who fall into the above category disproportionately are FOBs/International students who are either brown or asian.

Generally, when you hear people being "racist", its towards the mental model of these particular people who act in these particular ways.

Waterloo is a very tolerant and accepting place, you'll be fine!

    2. I agree with this as well

  8. For God's sake, white people are not an actual minority at uwaterloo! I'd say oriental Asians are close to being the majority, but there are still more white people overall. It only seems like it's an Asian majority because there's a higher concentration of them here than what people are used to.

    1. I am pretty sure we are. I sometimes do a running poll in my head as I traverse the campus. As of last count, it was 12White : 68Other, of which most are Asian.

Not saying I have a problem with it, but we are pretty definitely a minority here I think, at least by my count.

    2. Confirmation bias.

      Delete
    3. 8b how is this confirmation bias? I walk around and count. It isn't like the white people are all in camo hiding in bushes. I consider myself pretty good at counting stuff. I can count several stuffs of different types including people. I am a stuff-counting genius apparently.

      Delete
    4. @8a, 8c: In total, you've counted 80 people, which is a little less than 0.003% of the entire undergraduate population. This is not an adequate sample size. You also have to consider where you're doing this. Are you walking around the entire campus and counting? Certain groups appear more frequently in different areas (like Pokemon). People also are on campus at different times depending on the program they're in; for example, I've never had night classes. There are a bunch of other factors but I think you know why your study isn't reputable.

As for confirmation bias, I sense that too. At any given time when walking between classes, I see more than 70 people. If you're doing this walking around, sounds like you're counting selectively.

      Delete
    5. Oh, you sense the confirmation bias? Okay, my bad. Had I known I never would have contested you.

Also, it is summer term. There aren't so many people here in the summer. The only Bias I can really think of is that engineering classes are some of the few things that really go all-year in full force, so I probably see lots of engies around.

As another example: Of my class of 80-something people, only 11 are white by any measure.

    6. I think most of the asians are in engineering/math. It's white majority in every other faculty. Which results in an overall white majority (with asians being a close second)

      Delete
    7. >> Implying Waterloo has any serious academic programs outside engineering/math, and that people wasting their life in arts are 'students'

      Delete
    8. Yeah, 8f, I agree. My particular program in science is extremely white too, but I'm sure people think the handful of minority students make it "diverse".

      Delete
    9. I'm in AHS, and Asians are definitely a minority in my program.

      Delete
  9. Depends on your definition of racism. Are there friend groups which mostly consist of people of the same race? Yes. Are you gonna be excluded from clubs or get a lower grade in school because you're black? No

    ReplyDelete
  10. Don't worry OP! There are tons of accepting people here. If you're a good person then you will be liked. I can't promise everyone here is fair but if you unfortunately have racist encounters, keep your head up. I hope your first year is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I see a lot more black people now than when I started school here 5 years ago (last term). I think the school needs more. You'll be fine I think at the university. I'm brown and have experienced racism around town. I dunno if it's the same for black people, but yeah...I think you'll be fine tbh. It's all about that degree at the end anyhow. Good luck :).

    ReplyDelete
  12. Whites aren't a minority, they're just not an overwhelming majority. Get over yourselves.

You won't encounter much racism against black people, most discrimination in Waterloo is against brown people or fobby asians.

    1. Agreed, just think of the common memes on OMGUW: brown dudes are creepy, brown girls are ugly, FOBs are insular non-english speakers, FOBs drive expensive cars and flaunt their money, asian dudes are awkward/nerdy or creepy or meatheads, asian girls are slutty/prudes/ugly/nerdy/cakefaces.

      Delete
    2. How can asian girls be literally everything?

      Delete
    3. I actually think the main complaint about Asian girls is that they try so hard to be cute and act like they are 10 years old

  13. People on campus are only racist when they can't think of another way to hate on someone who is being a dick. Just be nice, don't be loud in a quiet study area, and for fucks sake shower every day and you will be fine. My program has one black guy, and is friends with everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Not a white person, a brown person here.
My friends and I got together and we made a list of all the various races in our program. Out of a program of 300 students 15 were white, no blacks, 50 brown people, the rest were Asian.

    1. I'm guessing you're in engineering/math?

    2. In my program there's 100 white people, 50 asians, 40 brown people, and 10 black people.

What does that prove? Fuck all.

  15. Its pretty simple, really. There ain't nothin wrong with being black, but you cant deny there are certain attitudes and behaviours that are more prominent within black culture.

If you want people to accept you, dont act like a fuckin nigger.

    4. Black culture in the US ad black culture in Canada is completely different. You cant just generalize a whole race. Plus how are you going to tell a black person to not act black...they're black. It's stupid ...like telling a white person to not act white...WTF

      Delete
    5. I NEVER told black people not to act black. I said don't act like a NIGGER.

There is a difference, and you are being dishonest if you say you don't know what it is.

Most of the time, the truth is rude.

  17. While KW is one of the leading areas in the entire nation for hate crimes I do find that the Waterloo campus is relatively tame in that regard. Though I'm white and not really in a position to speak of discrimination I've experienced. I've heard a lot of people complaining about other races, but nothing ever said about the black students on campus.

  18. OP dont worry. As long as your kind and respectful to everyone else, you'll be treated the same. Waterloo is a school with people from every part of the world (more asians and whites tho). But I highly doubt anyone will be blatantly racist to you. Enjoy your first year! I'm sure you'll have friends from all races with no problem.

  19. I'm an asian and I hate white people.

  20. It would be less of a problem for you if there were more than three black people outside of arts. You should have gone to UofT.

  22. NOT AT ALL RACIST HERE. If you want racism, go to Queen's. There's a hate crime there every year (usually against Islamic students though).

Most people here, like me, love people of all colors, religions and orientations. Welcome to the school :D

  23. Racism on OMGUW is not indicative of racism at UW, most people here are misanthropes.
