OMG: With the amount of people I see getting pets lately, I just have one thing to say: Please consider rescuing a pet from a shelter before looking on kijiji or something like that.

I guess I also have another thing to say: make sure you can sufficiently take care of it.

  1. I wish it were that easy, getting pets from shelters is so expensive! I know I can't afford a pet right now which is why I don't have one, but if I could it's really expensive to get one from a shelter :(

    1. I'm pretty sure it's much cheaper than buying a puppy from a breeder... They usually have their shots and everything, too.

    2. It is way cheaper getting one through a shelter. Even if you got a cat (for example) for free, the cost of the spay/neuter alone is more than the adoption fee where they come with that and much more done already.

    3. 1- It is that easy. You should only have a pet if you can afford all the expenses that come along with it. Therefore, if you can afford the long-term expenses, you can afford to buy one from a shelter.

  2. I wish people would think really carefully before getting a pet. We are young - are you 100% for sure you are going to be living a pet-friendly life after graduation? (rental restrictions, job commitments, moving etc)

I think it is best to wait until after school when you are more settled in life.

    Pets aren't a 1-2 year long commitment. They are 10 - 20 years.

    2. I have adopted a litter of kitties to the humane society in Kitchener.
There is an option to sign up as a temporary owner for animals when they are still young (you train/take care of them).
This is because during mating season, there are just too many for them to take care of.

P.S. Most places that you can adopt these animals allow you to play in a room full of the kitties and pick one with the right personality for you. Don't be afraid to visit multiple times and stay for an hour before you are sure

  4. What's wrong with getting a pet from kijiji? Some of them will end up in the shelter anyway. I'm thinking older pets.

  5. As a person whose adopted two cats, one from an accidental litter and the other from a shelter, be very very careful with your shelter cat. There were so many vet expenses because the little guy acquired fhiv from other cats in the shelter and i didn't find out until i took him to my vet. I love both my kitties, don't get me wrong, but the shelter cat broke my budget.

Also, there's nothing wrong with giving a pet, from any source, a good forever home.
