Nope - you'll still be charged the WPIRG fee, until the Board of Governors chooses to cut it off (which they'd do if a student referendum said "no more."
I don't see why this is a problem. WPIRG is not entitled to space in the SLC. They aren't even entitled to space on campus - I hope the next step is to refuse bookings to them anywhere on campus.
They act as a community action group, are not directly accountable ONLY to students (they allow non-students to hold membership and sit on their Board of Directors), and therefore should not receive the benefits of masquerading as such. They should be evicted, they should not be allowed to book space anywhere on campus, and they should have to secure their funding from other sources than students.
If there's a referendum on their fee, students should absolutely ensure that they lose their student funding. Make a community not-for-profit act like a community not-for-profit.
This. I have nothing against WPIRG - I actually kind of like the work that they do - but I don't see why a COMMUNITY-BASED not-for-profit focused on social activism should receive hundreds of thousands of dollars guaranteed from the local student population. Doesn't seem fair.
I agree that students shouldn't pay a mandatory fee, and that they shouldn't have office space on campus, but it is actually University policy to allow off-campus groups to book space on campus (as in, they can reserve a room for a meeting, but can't set up a permanent office).
Because anyone that isn't a member of WPIRG either dislikes it or is ambivalent about it. #nomoreWPIRGfeesftw

DeleteBecause I have no idea what WPIRG is and after Googling it I'm not impressed.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to see what Feds uses the space for instead! Hopefully something cool! :D
ReplyDeleteFor now, it's silent study space
DeleteProbably just more offices for feds employees
ReplyDeleteExactly what I've heard from a reliable source in feds.
DeleteI heard from a reliable source that it will be used as an alien autopsy lab.
DeleteAnything can sound legit when you are anonymous yourself, and can't name your source.
can confirm, this was pulled out of 4a's ass.
Deletethank god, we kicked out the hippies

DeleteThey need to make it so that we can process our refunds online instead of going to their offices to beg for our money back.
