OMG: When is UofW actually going to do something about the teriible ugly looking convocation that is hosted in a gymnasium? Why cant we hold it at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex like laurier does, or maybe somewhere else on campus? Does hagey hall not have enough seats? What about the hall that will be in the new science teaching complex? Come on waterloo you're better than this!!

  1. My parents were terrified of sitting in the bleachers during my ceremony because the bottom wasn't completely solid. They had to cling to the benches and shuffle across. I was angry when I heard this and have thought of complaining but wasn't sure where to direct it to or how many others felt this way. too

  2. For such a world class institution, I feel ashamed that my parents invested so much in my education and they have to sit in a dark and dingy gym to watch me graduate.

    1. The registrar's office plans convocation. You'd do a lot better directing your complaint there.

  4. After paying almost 70,000 in tuition for AFM, that's kinda sad :(

  7. Hagey Hall is definitely way too small. They should just do it at a nice venue (the Recreation Complex is ugly, sorry... it is not much better than our gym, other than it having real seats).

  8. With all the new buildings they keep building, they can't use one of them to make a nice space for convocation? Good grief. My parents are old and their backs were killing them after sitting there for over 2 hours.

  9. Yeah I felt pretty embarrassed to have my family sit on those bleachers for 2 hours.
It is pretty disgusting that the school can't fork out a bit of money to have a convocation in a real hall like most other universities do.

  10. Well the thing is we don't have such a big venue. I'm not sure what other ontario schools do, but US schools usually choose to do it in their football stadium, and they do all faculties which is really awesome because you can take photos with your friends from other faculties. It's a shame that they separate the days at Waterloo, but yeah, we simply don't have a big enough venue.

  11. Why not have it outdoors like a lot of American schools? It's much more scenic and spacious, and the natural lighting is great for pictures and videos.

    1. But, if they don't splurge and get tents, rainy days would wreak havoc on the situation. Plus, even then, it's so hilly in places that people would be sliding around everywhere (and heels getting stuck in the grass is also an issue).

    2. McGill has their convocation outside in tents (even when it's not rainy). They don't seem to have any problems with it.

  12. What about a theatre?.. I'm a little embarrased to say it but my brother's HIGHSCHOOL convocation, at centre in the square (downtown kitchener), was 100 times classier than graduating in the PAC :(

  13. Convocation staff are just as embarassed, they never get any money to update things. I heard there will be big changes soon though
