  1. good, one step closer to de-funding them. feds doesn't need to be funding a quasi-political group like this.

    1. Feds doesn't fund WPIRG

    2. @1a All full-time undergrads get charged a fee that goes towards WPIRG.

    3. ^sorry I was referring to that

    4. 1a but if Feds asked the University Board to de-fund Feds, the University would be legally obligated to listen.

    5. 1d, no the University would not be *legally* obligated to listen. But they would.

As far as the WPIRG fee goes, the UW Board of Gov's will do whatever students want. And I don't mean listening to a group of a couple hundred at a GM, I mean actually going to referendum. If a majority vote to keep the fee, they'll keep it. If a majority vote against it, they'll remove it. Plain and simple.

    6. 1e again here: I'm assuming 1d meant to say that the Feds would ask UW Board to de-fund WPRIG

    7. 1d, I'm pretty sure Feds has a legal recourse if the UW Board of Governors didn't accept a recommendation from the official Student Union on campus regarding a student ancillary fee like the WPIRG fee.

  2. I don't think FEDS even funds WPRIG. I don't see why WPRIG wouldn't belong in SLC. I feel that the termination of the lease if unreasonable, but this opinion is based on the limited information that I have on this matter.

    1. Feds doesn't fund WPIRG, but Feds does own the SLC, and has been trying to figure out the best way to use that space.

    2. *Feds manages the SLC, they don't own it

  3. Yeah, this seems like BS. FEDS getting back at them for the GMs. So petty.

    1. FEDS General Meetings.

Apparently (as I don't attend them myself) WPIRG had a sizeable presence at a lot of the meetings and used that presence to steer discussion towards issues they wanted heard.

    2. More likely it's just the Board adopting the recommendations of the SLC space audit.

  4. Good.

Now maybe Council can call a referendum on the WPIRG Fee, so that Feds can recommend to the UW Board of Governors that WPIRG be defunded (which the BoG would be legally obligated to accept).

    1. #1 here. I mistakenly thought that Feds funds WPIRG through student fees. Would love to see some sort of action on the separate fee though, Feds should be leading this.

  5. Wow... and this isn't even a decision a Feds AGM can reverse (GMs can't really meddle with contract matters like that)

    1. It'd be dangerous for WPIRG or any other group to try and fight back that way, anyway. Council has a habit of calling referenda when certain groups get pushy about wanting "special treatment" from Feds (see: the old campus radio station that got defunded). WPIRG wouldn't want to lose its fee, as well as its office.

  6. A lot of people on here have talked about Council, so here is a shameless plug: http://www.feds.ca/about/students-council/student-councillors/

Contact your Councillor and tell them how you feel. A quick email can go a long way to getting something done about this or any other issue you may have.

  7. I don't understand why people are so offended by this action?

I've heard no reasoning for keeping them in the SLC.

    1. everyone hates WPRIG

    2. ^they pulled some stunt recently with FEDS and they are annoying in general (have to pay them)

      Delete
    3. The fee is refundable so saying you "have to pay them" is misleading.

      Delete
    4. Not really 8d. You don't get to choose not to pay them. You have to pay them, and if you want that money back later you have to go out of your way to personally visit their office and ask for a refund.

It's not like a student endowment fund fee, which you can get refunded just by filling out an online form.

      Delete
    5. ^ so shouldn't you want WPIRG to stay in the SLC, making it easier to get to their office for your refund?

      Delete
    6. 8f Nope, I want the fee to be opt-in, not opt-out. There's no reason we should automatically get a fee collected.

  8. Hahahaha. WPIRG thought they were being clever by being assholes at the March General Meeting and now they realize that there are consequences when you bite the hand that feeds you. For a bunch of activists, they sure don't have an ounce of strategy to their actions.

    1. Haha yup. The Feds Board wasn't just going to IGNORE the results of the SLC Space Audit just because a group of assholes decided to force the creation of a clubs/WPIRG Library.

I'll bet you anything, guaranteeing that meant somebody would have to be evicted. And now WPIRG has been.

    2. 9.a) That new Clubs Library that WPIRG helped to advocate so hard on has to go somewhere afterall..... lol jk ;)
