What I told you when you asked about using the Mac labs was that you needed a computing account with the Math faculty. So, order to use the Mac labs you need to be a Math student (or registered for a CS course / taking a CS course), which is what I told you when you asked why you could not use the labs. Unfortunately, it's not me that decides these things, and who can and can't use those labs, but instead it is CSCF which states that (https://cs.uwaterloo.ca/cscf/teaching/labs) "To use the lab machines requires either being registered in a CS course, or registered as a Math Faculty undergraduate student. Others will not be able to use the machines. The labs do not use Nexus.", which is what I told you when I said that you need to be a Math student to use the Mac lab. I did say that Math students pay higher tuition, and the reason I gave you was that part of that tuition goes towards paying for these labs (maintenance, upkeep, etc.)
Now, if you wish to have that policy changed, you can contact the School of Computer Science about it here: https://cs.uwaterloo.ca/contact-us .
this makes sense, but it's still kind of inconvenient. there ARE students from other faculties that use the MC and it's services other than those in math.
it sounds like OP completely took your response the wrong way though.
3b: why the hell are arts students trying to use the math faculty computing equipment? I know for a fact arts has their own computing facility department. Math students can't use eng labs, AHS people can't use science labs, etc..
Also, MathSoc has absolutely nothing to do with it either way.
@3c: maybe some of them have all their classes in MC? i really don't know, but it's not uncommon for non-math students to use MC services in general (like the lockers, the C&D, the computing help desk on the first floor, etc.) mathsoc may not exactly have anything to do with it, but if anyone asks them for help, i'm sure the person asking would appreciate some help
"I can't use another faculty's computing equipment and I'm butthurt about it so I'm going to shoot the messenger who told me by trying to publicly shame him on the internet!!"
You are a fucking asshole. Stop taking out your inferiority complex on people trying to help your raging, sorry ass. I mean, ffs, there are Macs in the MathSoc office you could have asked to use if you wanted a Mac so badly, and *all* students can use those. This whole post reeks of looking for something to bitch about.
Hey hey hey, OP, apparently there's all these haters in CS. Come over to ECH in the fall term. We have a Mac lab and aren't upset to share it with others. You may have to shuffle around a bit though. Classes take place in there and people are assigned to specific computers. So if someone asks you to move, don't take offense. All their work is probably saved on there. Love always, The best program at Waterloo, Fine Arts.
Often when I have gone in there to print no one pays enough attention in order for me to pay them and get my printing. It's very frustrating especially when printing with only a little time.
I have also been kicked out of the CnD for their game events even though I was planning on participating but I guess I just don't look math enough
Can you explain what you mean by being kicked out (and to reaffirm you are talking about the Thursday Night game nights)? I've never seen anyone kicked out, though there are tight groups that plan ~1 week ahead what they are going to play, so it can be a bit frustrating finding a group that wants to play the same game as you.
You should come out to Games Night again, I think there's one this Thursday.
For the printing thing, it's because everyone behind the desk is socially awkward and are too busy playing games, talking about random crap. Basically doing their own shit instead of doing what they're suppose to be doing behind the desk.
On Board Games Night, we tell everyone that the room is booked for board games, anyone who wants to play can feel free to stay, but otherwise please leave.
@11d If you wanted to participate, then why not say so and Im sure they would have let you stay?
As for the MathSoc Office, this shouldn't happen nearly as often. I will admit it has been a problem in the past, but MathSoc now employs an Office Manager, whose job it is to handle these sorts of things. He is an employee of MathSoc and had a vested interest in helping you out (plus he is a super nice guy).
You're not in the math faculty, therefore you don't pay a fee to their faculty society, therefore you don't get to use things that they pay for and you don't.
You're in economics, don't you understand how these things are supposed to work?
Lol so butthurt artsfag

Hooray for a coherent response! And a true one, too!

3d the computers in the MathSoc Office are always free for anyone to use, no matter what Faculty they're from.
DeleteArts computing (PAS) has nexus and can be used by anyone, nobody wants to walk that far though D:

is this supposed to be sarcastic?
DeleteWhy would that be sarcastic.
DeleteMathSoc does suck. I won't comment on it sucking being influenced by this event since I did not experience it but from my experiences it sucks.
ReplyDeleteWhy is that? Maybe give some feedback so they can improve?
