Or we can, but we're just indifferent. I personally hate how prevalent programming is becoming but agree that knowing at least basic coding and high level logic ad function calls is important for most fields.
Also, I acknowledged that being able to make little "tools" for the tasks most of us do by brute force makes a person a much better asset.
All jobs, even in STEM, require being able to read. Maybe everyone should get an English minor!
But in all seriousness, computer literacy (not using MS office, real computer literacy) is going to be the next literacy. Humanity isn't going to advance anywhere if you can't figure out how to automate gruntwork with a computer. That's why everyone should know basic programming... yes, even writing excel macros counts, here.
Soon, every job outside of STEM will also require it. :P
ReplyDeleteC++, matlab, and Cuda C are examples of a few languages I have been forced to learn because of work, and i am in math finance.
ReplyDeleteIts fucking everywhere, infact I think if you want to be in any good field other than medicne, you ought to do atleast a minor in CS now.
nah, soon doctors will have to program patients prosthetic penises too
Deletei mean yeah it's a good skill to have
ReplyDeleteIt's almost like you deal with computers everyday in the 21st century in modern countries
ReplyDeleteIts not the same thing... programming stuff on raw languages is way different than knowing how to use a computer or excel or other ms suite
Delete4a: Most people don't program in "raw" languages. That would be assembly.
Delete4b: Most people can't tell the difference between assembly, low-level and high-level languages.

Fake it til you make it.
ReplyDeleteI don't see how this is at all surprising. Just learn some languages ffs.

That shit is hard tho. I don't think everyone can learn (like they can learn to read).
Delete@7a: Literary theory is also hard, but no one expects you to know it for everyday life. Basic coding is not difficult at all.
Deleteliterary theory
DeleteLol.
Agree totally 7. In so many fields they have specialized programs to deal with the quantity of information now.
