OMG: What's the closest beach near Waterloo? And the quality? Or any lakes for swimming? Thanks!

  1. Most people will go to Grand Bend (about an hour and a half away), which is good and big. There isn't much of quality very close by; Waterloo is rather landlocked.

  2. Elora Quarry. Not a beach but it's pretty nice. You can go swimming and cliff diving there. About 30 mins

  4. grand bend is the closest BEACH but there are other places to swim that are closer like elora quarry, there's also a quarry in town that is kinda off limits but if you go at night it's pretty cool just go with a small grou p of people and don't be too loud. Snyders flats has ponds to swim in but last time i was swimming there something bit my foot hahahahahha.

waterloo is landlocked though and grand bend/lake huron is definitely the most decent beach/lake in ontario. don't go to lake ontario it's pretty gross.

  5. There's a pretty nice beach at Bayfield (just north of Grand Bend on Lake Huron). It's not as crowded as Grand Bend, nice and sandy, and has a cool part of a sunken ship sitting right off the shoreline. The only drawbacks are that the first 20 feet or so when you get in the water is rocky, not sandy, so you have to get past that part to really enjoy the swimming, and there are a lot of stairs to get from where you park your car to the beach.

Port Dover is also pretty nice, but more crowds, and the parking is pretty far from the beach IIRC.

  6. Wasaga is a little far, 2 hours, but it's nice!

  10. Try the Pinery if you want awesome beaches without the Grand Bend crowds. 9 separate beaches including 2 that are dog friendly.

    1. Second this...I took pictures while at the Pinery's beaches and was showing these to a friend who knew I'd been to Jamaica 6 months earlier. When I showed him the Pinery photos he said, what part of Jamaica did you go to!

  11. I would recommend Port Dover - it's less than an hour away, about 50 minutes. Someone mentioned parking, it's not too bad, you just have to find a spot near the Tim Horton's, and if you get there in the morning, you won't have a problem. I would also recommend Turkey Point for a less crowded location, it's about an hour and 15 minutes away. My favourite beach however is Long Point... not crowded and the beach is amazing. You can swim at all the locations.

    1. And I would recommend Grand Bend if you like being with a busy young crowd.. it's not my favourite, but if that's what you like, I'd recommend it.
