OMG: The woman who can O Canada at convocation could not hit a single note. Also, I feel bad for the guests that had to sit on the worst bleachers ever. Seriously UW needs to invest in chairs or do convocation in a different hall.

  1. Our convocation is incredibly embarrassing

  2. I didn't think she was that bad, I actually thought she was pretty good... (I'm not sure if it's the same person singing at every convocation ceremony though. I was at the afternoon science ceremony) I sure as hell could never sing that well.

I do agree with the bleachers though. It is kind of embarrassing that UW holds their convocations in the gym. (They're worse than my high school!)

    1. I know for a fact there were at least 2 singers. I graduated in the pm science ceremony too and enjoyed the girl's voice.

  3. It's like the administration goes out of its way to make the ceremony dull and uncomfortable. We're all packed in like sardines, our parents (many of whom are older and have joint, etc. problems) have to climb up and sit on rock hard bleacher seats, and the lack of any sort of accompanying music makes the lack of applause very noticeable.

    1. The bleacher's are ridiculous. For some events they have to close half of them because small kids can fall through easily. The former director of athletics was trying to get them replaced but kept getting blocked.

  4. Your tuition well spent. Makes you feel appreciated doesn't it?

  5. You know it's bad when those who run convocation and the staff also think it's embarrassing. The uni won't give them any money to improve it!! (spoke to someone who works there)

    1. This is very true. The staff that put it all together want to make it an amazing event, but are tied up by budgets and a few senior admin who want things to happen a certain way.

  6. I agree with all these comments. Bleachers are just plain embarrassing. My parents said, this was the worst convocation arrangement ever. They attended my sister's convocation at York last year, and the seats were ROYAL. They were served lunch while at UW, all they got was cup cakes with juice.

"Atleast we aren't YORK" does not work during convocation for UW. We should actually learn from YORK.

  7. Last week my brother convocated from Guelph. There were a score of ceremonies with a little over a hundred people each; in this way no one ceremony was too long, and it allowed them to use a nicer but smaller venue. Surely UW could break it up a bit more to make it more palatable for the parents we presumably want to impress.

    1. In terms of duration Waterloo is actually doing pretty good with their 2.5 hour ceremonies and actually made that change not too long ago by breaking up faculties. UofT has ceremonies that last 5 hours. My parents were pleasantly surprised that my convocation here was shorter than my brother's at UofT

  8. You guys can sit here and complain all you want. But if you want something to happen you have to get off your assets and make it happen. Our convocation is disgustingly ugly, look at convocation like at western and you'll see what im talking about. If we can get enough students wanting a better convocation that's not in a gymnasium, they will make it happen

    1. They must have heard these comments from parents and students over the last few years repeatedly. With all the new buildings they are building, why don't they reserve a space for convocation while they're at it?!

    2. Sure I'll do something about it. How about when I do then I get the salary of the admin execs. I would be doing their job for them.

  9. They don't give a shot. They've already bled you dry of ll your money now they just want to get you out to bring in the fresh wallets

  10. Math had a VERY different singer for convocation, poor Mathies.

  11. Well the bleachers admittedly are awful however this allows for more people to come. At U of T you get 2 tickets only, but in a much nicer setting.
