Being convicted of manslaughter and sent to prison for 4 years is not the same as murder. There's no reason you should be unemployable once you've done your time and get out of prison.
That said, if you re-offend, you should probably come off the payroll...
Employed as a janitor, sure. But being an advisor to mentally ill students? Shouldn't something like that come up in a vulnerable sector background check?
^eh maybe it did come up, you don't know what happened. Maybe he's had a difficult journey dealing with it and finally came to terms with whatever he did and now he wants to help others. Or maybe he is crazy.
@2d: access ability does stuff for the mentally ill, too. i got set up with them when my depression and anxiety were making it really hard to get to class and write exams. i dealt with this guy, actually
but for the record i agree with #2 that there's no reason he shouldn't have been employed, maybe based on the circumstances of his manslaughter charge. also it was 30 years ago, that's longer than probably any of you have been alive
Yikes, he was my advisor too! Between this and the guy at counselling services who apparently assaulted a female coworker... does this sort of thing happen a lot here?
David Mackay a counselor at Counselling services was found by a non-UW tribunal last fall to have sexually harassed a phsychologist at Counselling Services . After a criminal investigation, Waterloo Regional Police Services gave her the choice of the cops charging him with sexual assault or giving him a police caution. She chose the caution for him but he refused to meet the cops. By contrast an internal UW investigation was inconclusive so he is still on the payroll. To date UW's made no public statement either to denounce his actions or to announce UW punishing him.

DeleteCould be anything.
2b, AccessAbility isn't Counselling Services. Why would an AccessAbility advisor be dealing with the mentally ill in the first place?
Delete@2c lol that's such a defeatist way of looking at this
Deletethen i guess you could say what hitler did was ok, it could've been anything that caused it right?

uh did you really want to make the link of how long students are alive and a UW advisor guilty of manslaughter? nice UW public relations work there
DeleteShit..
ReplyDeleteBathtub girl is also a murderer, and then there are the terrorists and drug dealers.
ReplyDeleteThere's a difference between who you admit as a student, and who you put on a payroll. The two are held to very different standards.
DeleteYikes, he was my advisor too! Between this and the guy at counselling services who apparently assaulted a female coworker... does this sort of thing happen a lot here?
ReplyDeletesome 3,000 people work for UW. There are bound to be a few bad apples - just human nature.

Delete^5b Tribunals are not courts. This guy was never charged with anything, ergo there's no reason the University should punish him for anything.
DeleteSo that's the bar now, being charged? You can't argue with that kind of logic. UW - not so in harmony with its ugly truth.
DeleteWhat the fuck he was my advisor I'm shaking right now... I confided in him... Wtf.... He was super creepy too. Omg this makes me so angry!
ReplyDeletewho are you angry at? what did you expect? what will you do about it?
