OMG: Has anyone signed a lease with the Schembri building on 1 Columbia? I asked if it was going to be done on time for September and they said yes but it looks really unfinished. Does anyone know what will happen if it's not done?

  1. They might put you in temporary housing. Last year I signed with Domus for one of the new buildings at King/Hickory (now under different ownership) for September 1st but they put me into the now demolished townhouses at Uni/Phillip until the building was complete in November. Was a little sketchy when I moved in to the finished place though, seemed like a rush job and promised furniture was missing and never came :/ After my experience I will never rent an apartment that is still under construction but hopefully your experience is better! Good luck.

  2. If it's not done in time, they can be legally required to foot your hotel bill.

    1. ^ really? what if they offer a place? Can I reject and say I want them to foot my hotel bill instead?

  3. It depends. I know a girl who was going to live in 69 Columbia but it wasn't done in time and she had to keep coming back with her stuff and they kept turning her away and I don't believe they offered her somewhere to stay. However, I also know someone else who made sure in their lease for 1 Columbia that there was an acceptable clause for what would happen. Definitely check your lease and make them sign something if it's not already in there.

    1. Very unlikely to be a breach of contract. The rental company covers their asses and OP sounds like a newbie to renting.

OP: If you signed on for an unfinished apartment and didn't make sure the lease included an acceptable clause in case it wasn't done on time you only have yourself to blame. Read your contracts people.

  5. I signed with them and they said that its going to be finished... if its not, they will have to accommodate us - that's what my mom said, she read the tenant act... I cant wait to live in a new building!
