  1. Um no, they're awesome.

  2. Yes some are good and actually make an effort to help. But one guy...no. Completely rude and when I asked a question he simply pointed to a contract written on the board without saying anything yet he proceeded to help the Chinese speaking students fine.

  3. I think you will be asked for feedback on the TAs near the end of the course so make sure you mention your experiences.

  4. They aren't hired. They are grad students with guaranteed funding. Very little you say about their work will change this.

    1. Not entirely true. The Math Faculty does care about the quality of its teaching staff. If you complain, more resources will be put into improving the teaching ability of incoming grad students.

However, you are correct that grad students are guaranteed funding. And the University uses TAships to supply some of that money. So individual TAs aren't going to be fired.

    2. Actually, in some departments (such as mine, which is within Engineering) you have to go through a whole application and interview process for a TAship, and they are quite competitive to get.

You still get huge variation in quality though.
