OMG: I'm a grade 12 conflicted between AFM and queens commerce. I like the coop part of AFM but after readin some omgs about AFM I'm not so sure about going there :/ But I noticed that most of the bad AFM threads were from 2012 so maybe the atmosphere in AFM changed and everyone is nice to each other now?
I would say your job prospects are better with AFM, but you will most definitely hate your life for 5 years.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you would say so, but most employers who actually want an employee of value would choose the Queen's grad.
DeleteNahh, hate in AFM is perpetual. Plus with the new CPA merge, the value has definitely decreased. It's definitely not worth my 18k a year anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'd say go with the one that attracts you more (school wise). It's also a false notion that everyone who leaves AFM will be CPAs/millionaires.
No it's only getting worse. But you never know, you may just be one of the few who loves this great program of ours! But Queens commerce is actually a great business program, and there are companies who prefer students who have graduated from that program,
ReplyDeleteI'm not in AFM, but keep in mind that you'll most likely only read the negative people on here. It's more common for people to use this website to whine than to talk about how much they love something. If you haven't visited each school in person, I highly recommend you do so. Sometimes being there gives you a better idea of where you'd fit.

DeleteIn AFM ......RUN AND DONT EVER LOOK BACK!
ReplyDeleteYou will turn into a self-loathing, bitter, pessimist!!
I wasn't aware of this site when I was in gr12 but it's great to hear from potential students on it. Like 4 said, only the complainers come on this site. No school is made 100% of satisfied students and Waterloo has its ups and downs just like other institutions. I hope this website hasn't made you see Waterloo in a negative way though lol. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWaterloo sucks fermented dog semen.
DeleteAs a Math/CPA student, I would only go into AFM if you are 100% SET on accounting. AFM's co-op is great for accounting, as accounting firms besides Big 4 recruit here unlike Queen's, but with accounting, you have to accept that although you will likely never get fired, the work you do is not very interesting and your friends who go into finance will make more than you.
ReplyDeleteThe school atmosphere is pretty good (spring terms are pretty awesome) and people are nice, but there can be an overwhelming sense of 'keenness' that you get from the some of the more vocal students in the student body. Co-op is great, you get full-time responsibilities as a co-op employee and you really learn a lot about yourself and the working world.
I've enjoyed my time here, but if I had the chance, I might slightly prefer Queen's, since I think the networking opportunities are a bit better there and I probably would have had more fun (not that I haven't had fun here).
What about Schulich vs AFM?
ReplyDeleteI m in my final year of AFM and I still don't have a job with an approved firm...so so much for writing my UFE after I graduate... The program is too overrated.
ReplyDeletethe fact that you don't know your year isnt writing the UFE is probably why you dont have a job with an approved firm.
DeleteSomething like 70% of the class of 2015 PAs got jobs at CATOs in 2A. That's pretty damn good. If you are unlucky/mediocre, you can't blame the program.
DeletePA and FMs are two different streams, the PA people have access to the Co-op CA option on Jobmine which is where the big accounting firms usually post. The PAs also have access too the FM jobs. Now the people in FM do not have access to the Coop CA jobs within jobmine... There are about 70-90 people in the PA stream, so ye there chances of getting a job in an accounting firm are pretty high.
DeleteA lot of the people in the FM stream DON"T get a job in a CATO firm, that being said its not impossible.
Current MAcc student
ReplyDeletethe bottom line: AFM prepares you the best if you want to be an accountant.
queens com is a general commerce program. yes, you can specialize, but if you're hard bent on being an accountant, waterloo is leaps and bounds ahead in technical prep, co-op opportunities, etc. its accounting accounting accounting. And fuck the haters, I've had a blast my entire time..if you dont like a program, or even a profession, then do something you DO like.
HOWEVER, if you're not as sure on what you want to do, or youre thinking more finance or something shoot for queens. its a fantastic school. (though i was always more of a western guy, not in the middle of nowhere)
hope i helped
^ This except the environment is kinda poisoned from what I've found, but I imagine most business programs will be similar. This advantage may or may not be as significant depending on how the CPA accreditation is gonna work so you may wanna look into that to get a definitive perspective. The debt I have, now that I'm in MAcc , is the thing that worries me the most. Other b-schools may not be as expensive.
DeleteYou can always choose your friends. Most people I've met in the program weren't that great, but if you look around there are some genuinely nice people. Filtering people is a life skill and I think you'll learn to do that really well here if you haven't already. Good luck :).
Agree with 10. AFM has excellent accounting prep, but if you find yourself in the program not wanting to be an accountant, then you are in a very specific program for something you don't want to do. Queens offers a broader business program, but the employment opportunities during school are almost non-existent compared to waterloo AFM.
ReplyDeleteLol AFM, I am not in it, and I have still held jobs that are the same as some really competent AFMers and some jobs that are way better, and for which, afm kids would be underqualified for.
ReplyDeleteAll this for half the tuition, doesn't matter what your program is, it matters what opportunities you are given (i.e jobmine or internships) and what you make of them.
Queen's Commerce doesn't have co-op but lots of internship opportunities and also they require you to do a recruitment placement of a sort. They also offer overseas exchange programs which is very valuable and most people do it.
ReplyDeleteConsider the university's atmosphere, how far you're from home, the type of people you'll be interacting with for the next 4-5 years, tuition costs, etc. That plays an important role.
Commerce is pretty competitive; AFM is as well but I feel it can be a little bit more relaxing.
As in commerce is more relaxing or afm?
Deletego to queens kid.
ReplyDeleteyou'd be stupid to not go to queens
ReplyDeleteOr just not white I guess...
DeleteQueens = general business
ReplyDeleteAFM = accounting/finance
If you don't know what you want to do when you graduate, go to Queens. If you want to get into accounting or finance, choose AFM. Good luck!
Approached by two of the big four firms, I'm not even in AFM. If you have money to burn then choose AFM.
ReplyDeletewhat are exit opportunities like for CPAs?
