OMG: Why do so many students purposely destroy the places they rent? I'm a non-student living in a building that also rents student units. Over the years various student tenants have broken pieces off the wall in the foyer or put holes in it, pissed/shit/puked on the walls or floors, pulled the door handle off, and ripped out the fire alarm panel. Why do you do this?? It makes the building unsafe for everyone and raises rent prices because the landlord has to pay for repairs. Have some respect for the property and for your neighbors. If you can't, go back home to your parents.

  1. This is a really good question (although there are non-students who do this shit too!)

  2. Generalizing will get you so far. Like 1 said, it's not just students who do that. I've met plenty of non-students who for all reason just do more than what you mentioned.

  3. +1, 2

Don't forget to mention all the selfish, greedy, landlords who lie and cheat students' money.

  5. When leaving both of the places I've rented, my landlords made a point of saying that my housemates and I kept the house in better condition than anyone who had previously rented. I don't understand why this had to be said - since I didn't put holes in the walls and used the bathroom and kitchen as they were supposed to be used, I am a superb tenant? That is ridiculous. Take care of where you live. Until you own a house (renting is not owning!), the property is not yours and needs to be respected.

  8. Probably because:
    a) Students are only in a house for 4-8 months, don't own it, and therefore have no investment, financial or otherwise, in keeping it in good shape
    b) Diffusion of responsibility when you have 4-5 other roommates. It just takes 1 person to start shitting things up
