OMG:
I rented a sublet room for my co-op term and moved in today. The room is nothing like the pictures I was shown! There's garbage everywhere, full room smells like cigarette and big tank of cigarette butt on the table, which is bad since I'm allergic to cigarette, also used tissue paper on the floor, chewed gum under, beside and on the table...WTF!?!?!? I think I was so mislead by the guy who sublet his room to me...what can I do?

  1. you, my friend, have moved into a crackhouse.

Your options will depend on where your co-op is located.

  2. You have cause to leave, if that's any consolation...

  3. Do you share a kitchen or bathroom with your (sub)landlord? If so, talk to a lawyer.

If you do not, then look at the Landlord & Tenant Board website: http://www.ltb.gov.on.ca/en/STEL02_111281.html and possibly talk to a lawyer anyway.

  4. Did you sign a contract before seeing? If not, find a new place and move out. If they ever did (very unlikely) take you to court, the first thing they will ask you is whether you are still living there, you say no and give your reasons (with evidence), counter sue for legal fees and suffering lol,, or does this only happen on judge judy?

  5. This is why one should never ever move into a place without seeing it in person first. My room-hunting experiences in Waterloo have always been interesting. Most of the time I would get there to see a room completely different from the pictures I saw on the ads. I can't even begin to recount how many times I was deceived, but would thank my lucky stars I saw it first, as there were times when I wanted to rely on the pictures alone. So yea, always visit first and make sure you like it. And never sign anything without seeing the place first.

  8. Something like that happened to me when I subletted a place I didn't look at in person first. (I was living in Ottawa during the previous term for a co-op) I just stuck with it and cleaned up my room as well as I could. If you have an SO, sleep over with them a lot :P (I didn't have an SO at the time)

But talk to off campus housing as well for actual advice. Maybe you could negotiate for a shorter lease and move out halfway through the summer or something. (summer sublets are easy to find, even in June)

  9. Thread hijack: What is everyone's experience with atlas properties? Debating on whether or not I should sign a lease with them.

This was my apartment last term. I subletted this place for 4 months and this one guy made the majority of the mess there. There was some mysterious black shit all over the washroom floor and the table was filled with half eaten Chinese food and wrappers of various products. The pictures were taken in the middle of the cleaning process too. It's really too bad I didn't take pictures when it was at its peak of dirtiness. tl;dr I'm never going to rent a place with an international student living there ever again.
