O.P just lean back. I agree that people should be courteous and not lean back if they realize the bus is full but if they do, I just push my seat too.

I once had someone lean back his chair until it hit my legs and when he made contact with my legs he repeatedly hit my legs with the chair trying to recline further.
I took a bus seat to the knees.

Well tough shit. If the person wants to lean back, that's their prerogative.
You can however, politely ask them not to lean back, however they really do not have to. Unless you are obese or freakishly tall, you have enough room.
By the way, having a backpack in front of you is not a legitimate excuse to get more room.
