OMG:
Now that my homecoming hangover is over, I can say today that Laurier wins hands down on "school spirit" year after year. 'Twas a sea of gold and purple on Saturday yore. Now, older persons here don't give a shit... they just want to graduate on time. However for the frosh on here and future generations, make sure y'all show some Warrior pride next year and spread the word.

What the hell is homecoming, anyway? I thought that was just in the states.
October 2, 2012 at 10:45 PM
car crashes. don't forget those!
October 2, 2012 at 10:51 PM
IMO the only downside to waterloo is the lack of school spirit.
October 2, 2012 at 10:53 PM
you clearly missed waterloo homecoming
DID YOU SEE INSIDE OF DC? IT WAS PACKED!!!!!!!! NOTHING LIKE HOMECOMING AND SOME HOMEWORK INSIDE DOWNTOWN CHINA/DEVELOPED CHINA!
October 2, 2012 at 10:57 PM
I'm not here to have school spirit, I'm here to get a good job. Oh no, I don't get drunk every night - I also don't go to Laurier.
October 2, 2012 at 11:33 PM
Amen! I was dressed up in black & gold in a sea of purple at Buritto Boyz after the game.. one girl even came up to me & said she was from UWaterloo & she was decked out in purple! :'(
October 3, 2012 at 12:18 AM
Who gives fuck...?? honestly!! I can't put that shit on my resume! (unless you're an organizer of course)
October 3, 2012 at 7:47 AM
Please don't act so high and mighty guys. You and I both know that each and every one of you wasn't doing anything better when you could have been cheering and being merry. Can't put that on your resume? Maybe not, but by that same token real employers don't give two craps about anything but your work experience.
You're all jaded and I have a solid resume, great employer feedback, AND school spirit.
October 3, 2012 at 1:46 PM
There is more to life than just getting a good job.. It's too bad many of the students on this campus work hard their entire life just to die and have nothing. Remember to balance fun and work..
October 3, 2012 at 4:06 PM
@9: I pick much more worthwhile things to be interested in than my school. Granted, I'll fake it for work because employers care about that, but I don't understand why I should dedicate so much of my time to a school that uses me as slave labour (read: volunteer), only paying me with the phrase "it'll look good on your resume."
And to answer your question: I was in bed during homecoming, doing bed things. You know why? I have bed spirit. love it! It's beautiful, comfortable, and always there for me after a rough day (usually caused by school). My bed has never made me submit forms that need to be signed by 4 different people or put me through any sort of bureaucratic garbage, and my bed has never asked me for more money after I slept in it.
October 3, 2012 at 4:13 PM
^If you come on here you obviously care about something. Why else would you frequent a Waterloo website. So next year, wear a fucking t-shirt on Saturday. And if enough people did that, at least some sort of pride would show.
October 3, 2012 at 7:46 PM
I bow down to Laurier's school spirit. It's something which UWaterloo desperately needs. We are so divided based on faculties and race. This is one time of the year when we can all get together and cheer for one thing:- OUR school! Have a nice homecoming party and live to tell the tales what happened on the homecoming night:D
October 3, 2012 at 9:01 PM
Well most of our school is represented byy alot of these commenters; they dont give two fucks about what school they are at, they just want their degree and a job.
October 3, 2012 at 10:55 PM
Why not get some joy out of your university experience? It's not like you go to a top university or anything. UW ranked 48th for top engineering & technology in the world... behind UofT, UBC, and McGill. http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2011-12/subject-ranking/subject/engineering-and-IT

Our school is full of self-centred Asians who only care about working and making money. These people are anti-social and don't give a rat's ass about anything else or anyone else. Not to mention all the immigrants too. With people like that constituting a large portion of the student population, school spirit is something rare around these parts.
Sad what's happened to this school in terms of social aspect since the 90s. We even had a championship football team back then.
October 4, 2012 at 12:21 AM
@12: I don't understand how Waterloo got this hold over you. It's not important; after you leave, life will go on here. They'll still fuck up and waste student money, they'll foster bureaucracy, they'll hire morons to do their administrative jobs, they'll continue to allow professors to treat the school like a private club, all the while asking their students for money at every turn (most schools don't need you to pay for your transcript, you know, and I've never heard of another school asking for money for a proof of enrolment form). Your only contact with the school after you leave will be when they ask you for money (usually a month after you graduate and are still swamped with student debt).
Try doing something worthwhile with all this great spirit you have, instead of supporting a school that only cares about your wallet and future accomplishments.
And yes, I do care about something. You got that right. But coming on this website does not mean that I care about this school. I don't know how you made that conclusion.
October 4, 2012 at 12:35 AM
Saying "I came to this school to get a job, not to have school spirit" is stupid. Thats implying you came here to get good grades, not to have fun, get involved in your school community and socialize. You came to this school to enhance your future, not get a job. Good luck getting a job with only grades.
October 4, 2012 at 12:59 AM
^yet another person that thinks you can only volunteer at school. Most of the volunteering you do at school is useless and helps no one.
Maybe this is mind-boggling to some people here, but clubs, volunteer opportunities, and friends exist outside of school.
Also, just because some of us don't have school spirit doesn't mean we're loners.
October 4, 2012 at 3:30 AM
@17 so the 9,000 kids at Laurier are all fools? So the hundreds of thousands of students at every fucking university that support their teams and wear colors just once a year are all fools? They are all fools at (name any American university) They are all fools at Queens? They are all fools at Western? Waterloo has this fucked up holier-than-thou we are above socializing or having a rally mentality that is sickening.
October 4, 2012 at 9:05 AM
This thread is actually really depressing. I knew Waterloo students were mostly boring, career-oriented dickbags, but I didn't know they were so miserably cynical too.
Jesus guys, you're all such fucking downers.
October 4, 2012 at 9:56 AM
How are people even fighting against school sprit? This is exactly what's wrong with this school.
October 4, 2012 at 10:12 AM
I was floored by these comments. If you hate the school so much why do you go here? There are plenty of good schools in Ontario, or do you hate those too? Honestly, university is an opportunity to try new things, learn as well as have some fun. I was out on Saturday and I agree with OP, I was jealous. There is nothing wrong with school spirit, and it is not synonymous with getting drunk. I feel bad that some people are so concentrated on school that they actually believe they can't have any fun. You know how to show you are a well rounded individual? Have some passion about the things you do. It will serve you well in the future. I sure as hell hope none of you Waterloo haters are going to try to pull the alumni card when getting a job.
October 4, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I already knew this was the case but its still sad. I think it has to do with the fact that so many people here went through High School hating their lives and being picked on by the kind of people they associate with sports, spirit, and having a good time. They carry this jaded and spiteful mind-set with them to university (I know I did) and since its the majority of people, that becomes the culture. I'm sure the above applies to many people going to other schools, but there they are the exception, not the rule.
I can only speak for myself but I know when I started participating, coming out, and supporting the school I started enjoying my time here a lot more. In the end, what do you have to lose? You're going to spend the rest of your life in front of a screen working and doing what few hobbies you have time for. Why not enjoy everything university has to offer while you can.
October 4, 2012 at 2:56 PM
@20: No, they're not necessarily fools. School spirit is great for some, and I guess the non-sensical act of donning certain colours could be considered fun to some. I just don't see the point.
According to most of the "school spirit" pushers in this thread, we should have spirit just because we go to this school. On those same lines, that means I should have "City of Waterloo spirit" because I live in this city and "Canada spirit" because I'm a citizen of this country. It's almost like you're telling me to don my school, community, and country colours without complaining and questioning how things are done. I don't work that way. I've participated in this school on many levels and came to the conclusion I have zero respect for its administration (side note: I respect a bunch of my professors). Why then, should I have school spirit?
By the way, you're making an illogical link between "school spirit" and "socializing." One doesn't necessitate the other. Are you saying that people who have never gone to university or college are without friends? That'd be a pretty foolish claim.
