OMG:
Somebody stole the handlebars and brakes off my bike locked up at campus. Later, I found out that somebody stole my two roommates' bikes from the shed behind our house (one was locked in the shed). There goes any trust I had for the citizens and students of this city.

Somebody's been stealing a shit ton of bikes. My friend's from outside E5 (the seat was taken off of it and it still got stolen) and my roommate's from behind our house.

I'm sorry to hear this. When my bike was stolen it was honestly the worst day of my entire life.

I have since invested in 200$ worth of bike protection.

If you've had a bike or bike parts stolen in the past few days contact tempest-in-a-teacup@hotmail.com
I have some info that may be helpful :)

The bike theft really does suck. I've had my old bike stolen, and recently my bike lock was cut off, and my bike was moved a few racks down at the side of MC. I don't know why the bike was left behind when the lock was nowhere in sight (maybe they were gonna come back for it?).

Anyways, I have a few tips.

    1. Don't bother getting cable locks, or cheap U-locks (they can be broken with a hammer). Get a good U-lock, it will cost you but it's still cheaper then a new bike.

    2. Lock your bike up only in the most public and high traffic areas, never leave it overnight, and keep your bike inside at home.

    3. Make sure you lock both the frame and the front wheel to the bike racks.

Obviously this doesn't guarantee your bike is safe, and does little for stolen seats but it does make it more difficult to steal.

Only a shitty person world steal bikes. What is wrong with people? And where's the cvalue in just stealing the brakes and handle bars? Is there a bike black-market in KW??

    10 . essentially

My bike was totally stripped of everything (including my 15ยข water bottle holder) except the chain, and the frame was left locked to the rack outside of Eby Hall last October. I find it alarming that PlOps/Housing don't even bother installing light fixtures over many of the bike racks; they're in dark corners essentially saying "PLEASE STEAL ME!"

@10 Yes, there is quite a large black market for these kinds of things. Once they're stolen, they'll get them out of WR (usually to London or Toronto or Windsor) and assemble bikes there from the parts, then make some money selling them. Look at Igor Kenk; he made a killing selling stolen bikes (well, those that he wasn't just holding on to in his warehouse).
