OMG:
I almost saw a person get hit by a GRT bus two days ago and then Friday someone actually got hit (in front of DC). Please be super careful crossing Ring Road! I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

There are some really fucking dumb smart people at this school. Don't walk in front of moving vehicles.
September 8, 2012 at 5:36 PM
students need to watch where they are going....it is just as much their responsibility as the drivers
September 8, 2012 at 5:37 PM
@1 - so true! no further commentary needed.
September 8, 2012 at 5:55 PM
Probably texting while crossing the ring road...
September 8, 2012 at 6:42 PM
I can probably count the number of times I've seen people look both ways before crossing Ring Road on my hands and I've been here several years. Hopefully this stands as a reminder to people to be more careful.
September 8, 2012 at 7:39 PM
@1 - Don't be such a douchebag.
@4 - He was running across the road when he got hit.
I heard he may not survive due to how severely he was injured. :(
September 8, 2012 at 7:43 PM
1 here. Don't run in front of moving vehicles then.
I have no sympathy for someone who doesn't understand than even with the right of way, getting hit by a car will at the very least hurt you.
September 8, 2012 at 7:45 PM
^ *that
September 8, 2012 at 7:53 PM
Well I'm not going to judge him cause who knows what was going through his mind at that point. Maybe he had his eye on another bus he was about to miss, or maybe he miscalculated how fast the bus was approaching, or maybe he ran in front of the bus on purpose. I don't know and you probably don't either.
"getting hit by a car will at the very least hurt you" - I don't think anyone would need to inform him of that as he probably already had that knowledge.
Unfortunate accident.
September 8, 2012 at 7:57 PM
I feel sorry for him, but second everything that's been said here. It's nice to come and not see driver bashing happening. The amount of times I've seen my peers bolt out without looking both ways, especially after leaving in front of the bus, is insane.
Everyone, just pay attention :). No matter what.
September 8, 2012 at 8:10 PM
If he lives, send him back to fucking elementary school because that's the time in your life you learn not to get hit by cars.
What a fuck.
September 8, 2012 at 8:33 PM
I drive around the school all the time. I know that if I were to drive as fast as the bus drivers do around Ring Road (they're not speeding, they just have a schedule to meet) I would be scared shitless of hitting someone. There's so many fucking stupid and inconsiderate pedestrians it's not even funny.
September 8, 2012 at 9:32 PM
It was a cyclist not a pedestrian, apparently. http://www.reddit.com/r/uwaterloo/comments/zjbs7/whats_up_with_the_police_outside_dc/
September 8, 2012 at 9:33 PM
Why isn't there a crosswalk there??
September 8, 2012 at 10:28 PM
^ there are fucken cross walks along university....do people use them? NOPE! People are fucken stupid....I always see people trying to jay walk, dodge cars just to catch a bus...people don't realize that missing a bus isn't the end of the world...while getting hit by a car/bus when might actually be the end of your world! I agree with the previously stated observation that people don't check both ways before they leap onto the road..specially students...and to make it worse they are messing with their electronic devices at the same time. The only thing which I could say to the bus drivers is that they really need to stop at all the stops specially the ones near intersections....i have seen several time people will be waiting for the crosswalk and they see the bus coming and start running across the road to catch the bus.

Guys, I hope you realize that this is someone who is seriously injured. Regardless of whose fault it is, there needs to be some sympathy. You would never talk like this when talking about a friend nor would you ever wish this upon someone.
Something traumatic like this is something he will never forget. So just let this be a lesson to everyone.
September 9, 2012 at 2:24 AM
He gets no sympathy, and will probably not learn from the experience.
September 9, 2012 at 9:26 AM
@17 No sympathy? Really? None at all?
It's a person who was being careless or was somehow impaired or distracted during the wrong couple of seconds. I still have sympathy for them because they're a person with a family who is now seriously injured.

It's disgusting to see how many of you simply don't give a shit about this person. The entire situation is very unclear and it seems as though no one really knows who was at fault.
In any case, the student was seriously injured, and if they survive this accident, I'm sure they will learn from it. How could you not?
You all must feel quite good about yourselves for bashing the shit out of an individual who needs all the support they can get while you hide your identities.
September 9, 2012 at 12:12 PM
It was a matter of time before an incident like this would happen. It is unfortunate and best wishes go to the student and their family.
I ride the bus daily and see this happen all the time. Students who blindly walk or run in front of the bus with no regard for their personal safety. This includes the people who stand too close to the bus stop curb like the Iexpress in front of DC. I have seen buses stop completely before the stop and honk at students to move back because they are standing on the road at the bus stop. It's not a culture thing as buses are universal but an ignorant mentality of "they will accommodate me because I'm so important."
If you play chicken with a car the car will win, elementary school knowledge. Just be safe and respect the rules.

@22 and anyone else who chooses to condemn this person without knowing anything about it.
This was a person with friends, co-workers, parents. All whom are dealing with this horrible situation the best way they can. I hope you never find out how it feels when someone you care about is injured and may not make it. I can't believe your ignorance. I think a 4 year old might actually have more intelligence than you do.
You should be ashamed of yourself. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Why not wait until you know the circumstances before you shoot your mouth off in a public forum.
I sincerely hope anyone who knows this person and has looked at this display of ignorance has the sense to pay no attention to it. Concentrate your efforts where they need to be...with the injured person who lies in a hospital bed fighting for life.

So no one thinks it was the bus driver's fault? Really?
Yes, people should know to look both ways before crossing a street. That's a given, and he contributed in some way to what happened...
... But the bus driver has been trained to manipulate and propel this mass of steel to great velocities, and his job depends upon his ability to do so properly. The GRT drivers aren't known for their ability to drive well (I remember lots of curbs, weird accelerations, etc), but this driver didn't have the senses, or the reaction time he needed to avoid the collision.
Just the other side of the argument.
September 9, 2012 at 3:14 PM
^ Someone should have given that epiphany of knowledge to the person that ran in front of the bus. "Running in front of bus bad, don't do it." Perhaps UW should teach a course on it. I bet they would have to curve the grade though.
September 9, 2012 at 3:21 PM
26- um, you can't just stop a bus in a split second. Sorry, sweetie. If someone runs out in front of a car or bus, even if the driver reacts as fast as is humanely possible, depending on the weather conditions and size of the vehicle, it's likely the person will still get hit (despite the driver's competence).
September 9, 2012 at 3:25 PM
^ Your use of sarcasm really got your point across
September 9, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Wow, this guy has been injured to the point where he may not make it and you assholes just comment on this accident like he deserves to die. Want a gold star for knowing how to cross the road? You probably do. You can have another gold star for your outstanding display of ignorance.
September 9, 2012 at 4:50 PM
Book smart, life dumb.
September 10, 2012 at 12:43 AM
People say he was on a bicycle, therefore it is more likely that the bus driver can be at fault. So don't go making up things such as running in front of the bus when you don't know the details
September 10, 2012 at 1:55 AM
^ I was just told he was running by a friend who witnessed the collision. *shrugs* Figured the source would be reliable since he was there.
September 10, 2012 at 11:33 AM
It doesn't matter if he was on foot or on a bike. Don't be in front of moving vehicles. Fault's not going to help you when you're dead.
September 11, 2012 at 8:53 AM
Is it a culture thing? Almost saw an accident this morning. The IExpress had the turn signal and some asian girl decides she wants to cross the street on a red light, so she walks across. The bus slammed on the brakes and honked at her but she didn't care. Do buses need to put cow catchers on the front for these idiots? Does the university need to put a fence around the perimeter like a daycare or zoo? What are the university police doing about this? This is beyond pathetic.
September 11, 2012 at 12:30 PM
why is this up to the UW Police to fix this? get your head out of your phone, or your laptop....get it right out of your ass when you cross the street. Ring Road isn't a giant pedestrian right of way.
stop walking (or cycling) right out into traffic....obeying the rules of the road would prevent tragic events like this from happening.
September 11, 2012 at 3:45 PM
@32 .....STFU...."if he was on a bicycle it was probably the bus driver's fault"??????...BULL SHIT. he danced out into traffic and found a bus with his face - therefore his fault
guy wasn't on a bike, he was on foot.
September 11, 2012 at 9:34 PM
Does anyone know if he's okay...?
September 12, 2012 at 12:30 AM
Last I heard, he's in critical condition. :/
