There are so many international students in math that I want to meet but they all group up and speak mandarin making it scary and impossible for a Chinese-Canadian like me to go in.

It's true. MC = Mainland China

  4. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

i can tell op that they feel the same with you in terms of making friends

  5. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

To them coming to Canada for school isn't an experience where they take in our culture, learn the language and meet people, it's just an institution for grades. Sad.

I am Asian (not the East Asian kind), international and I hang around MC. Come meet me!

Plus, I like Chinese-Canadians more than the regular Chinese.

I WANT TO MEET THOSE PRETTY INTERNATIONAL GIRLLSSSS!!

  10. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

OP its not "so many international students" its "soooo many Asians". Way too many Asians in MC dude.

  11. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

@7: Cuz I don't understand most of you when you speak English. I get along perfectly with those East Asians who can carry a conversation with me.

Plus, sometimes East Asians get way too loud, especially when they converse in their native language. Feels like a thousand hammers and banging inside my head.

  12. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

^ Soooo true. The way they talk gets extremely annoying.

  13. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

@8, you seem a bit too prepared...

  14. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

    @8

I know who you're. This is your FB account.

  15. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

I hate it when people do that. I understand when you're with your friends you want to speak your first language, but during one co-op my only friend also had another chinese friend and when all three of us ate together then they would just be speaking in chinese and I would sit there doing nothing. I thought it was so inconsiderate...

  16. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

@5: I completely agree with you

    Were you born yesterday?

  22. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Yes. I couldn't care less about your nationality, just speak English so we can all be friends.

  23. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Who else gets super happy when the Chinese fail at things in the Olympics? That and the US, love seeing both teams lose.

  24. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

I feel the same way OP, kind of.
So many international students in maths, and I'm so intimidated when people speak in a language I don't understand in big groups, I'm scared to go up and introduce myself to anyone.

  25. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Firstly, I find international students friendlier than the hamburger ones. It might be a little uncomfortable to approach a group but I don't think language has anything to do with it. The fact that they are in Waterloo guarantees that they know English. When there is a will there is a way. Stop complaining, and have everyone speak whatever language they feel comfortable with. If you can't handle it, walk away. Simple :)

Ahaha this thread looks like a North Korean public opinion forum. "Comment deleted" everywhere.

  27. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Why are comments censored if the site has no official affiliation with UW?

  28. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Dam i'm really curious about all these removed comments...

  29. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Not sure if comments really being removed or posters commenting with 'This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.'

  30. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Poor Asians. Can't stand a word against themselves.

  31. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

LMAO at the amount of censoring that is going on

  32. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

LoL, no worries OP, I know what you mean...but look here, your in math and in Waterloo, which makes you smart! So approach it smartly. There is an old Chinese saying, "sometimes, its not how you solve a problem, but the problem that you solve." Rather than approaching an intimidating group, try and introduce yourself to one or two of them...essentially, solve the smaller problem. Approach like you would approach any other person, ask for a pen or ask about some notes in class, which program they are in...talk about guys/girls in that program/class LOL. Then when you are just talking to that person and their friends show up, introduce yourself to everyone. And then mention your going for lunch. Many Chinese students eat together. A good reason for this is that Chinese culture emphasizes togetherness. And a common aspect is eating together. When you interact with a Chinese person over a dinner table, or anyone for that matter, they are more open. And I am sure that you know a few words in mandarin/Canton. So yeah take it from there. Good Luck!
