^ It's not that they "finally found something". They found the particle that they built the large hadron collider to look for. Not to mention the fact that the higgs boson particle is incredibly important to particle physics.
It is an incredible day in the development of physics. Thought it was not found to be THE Higgs Boson. It was found to be a Higgs-like boson. The important part is though that the current model of particle physics predicted that this particle would exist within the determined energy range and they certainly did find a particle in this range which is a great experimental confirmation of the current standard model and gives plenty to research.

They sure spent enough money on it....so I guess glad they finally found somethin.

Why praise the lord for it? Not like the "lord" has anything to do with science.

^ thats the joke idiot, because its called the god particle

It's cheesy but does a nice job of summarizing it.
TL;DR it's a very important particle that essentially determines the mass of any other particle in the universe.

Watch this one if you didn't like #8's video:
<a href="http://vimeo.com/41038445>The Higgs Boson Explained</a>
Best layman's introduction to the topic, in my opinion.

Whoops. Left out a set of quotation marks. HTML fail. I think you get the idea.

I wish a physics major or prof would post something interesting in response to this

Apparently Higgs called it "The goddamn particle" and some media person changed it to "The God Particle" to troll everybody a few years back
