OMG:

I'm sick of people saying Feds Sucks, The Exec Blow, Feds is a bunch of Idiots. I got big news for you... YOU ARE FEDS! Feds= Federation of Students. You are a student and you are a part of this Federation. If you don't like something that your representatives are doing, then tell them. Make them do something different.

this OMG

'you are students and you are part of this federation'

LOL THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS BRO

  2. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

    preach!

  3. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

This argument can be applied to almost anything in life. I for one, do not dedicate my time to unimportant, lost causes like Feds, that only affect me for five years of my life.

  4. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Talking to them sounds wonderful in theory. Until you watch their general meeting (where their employees, execs, and supporters hold a "vote" to push their agendas through)

Nasty organization, nasty staff members. . . blowing money like no tomorrow on furniture and other useless things.

    Sounds like MyFeds!

  5. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

I agree everytime I went to the office to buy a ticket the lady was really rude

  6. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

    MILITARY COUP! VIVE LA REVELUTION!

  7. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

The OP is right - all students are Feds.

Also, I find it funny that #3 thinks 5 years isn't a long time (it is!). Also, these 5 years of your life are pretty significant.

  8. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Feds is shit and so are the supporters. Come up with relevant information to support your claim and stop with conjecture.

  9. Blogger Simon Magnus Says:

I've talked with FEDS plenty of times, and I've seen lots of people tell FEDS what is wrong with them, but it doesn't change anything. Even in frank discussion, FEDS representatives generally try to tell us that all the things they do wrong is somebody else's fault.

  10. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Agree with #9 totally. OP how does one "make" their representative do something? I have seen posts on this site that are critical of said individuals then the reply is always some apologist blaming the poster. We are told not to use this site as a medium for disproval but it seems to get attention from the right areas to have people respond in defense of the candidate. We are told "they are doing the best they can" which could be true or not, but I wish I could do that at work and say "sorry boss give me a do-over, I'm doing the best I can." Doesn't work that way, especially if these FEDS representatives are getting paid to do this job. I can see why people get sick of the games these FEDSters play as there is no accountability for their positions. Even the process of them being elected is a joke with the low turnout. But hey these people are getting free money why would they want to change anything, times are good to be in the FEDS money trough.

July 5th, SLC GREAT HALL - ENOUGH complaining on some random site. It is time to make our voices heard. I am organizing a protest. Bring your issues, upon arrival just sit in front of the FEDS office. Do not cause a disturbance, you will be kicked out. Just occupy the office, occupy the space in front of the office. WE SHALL HAVE OUR ANSWERS!!!

Your first sentence tells us not to talk shit about FEDS execs, and your second last sentence tells us to talk shit about FEDS execs. You sir, are an enigma

  14. Blogger Anonymous Alumnus Says:

to #12, you are better off protesting during a council meeting. July 8th 12:30pm MPR SLC is the next one

to #13, I'm saying to stop being part of the problem and start being part of the solution.

  15. Blogger Anonymous Alumnus Says:

It is important to note that the Exec are the face of Feds but this council and all students are the ones who control them. If you choose not to exercise your power then that's your problem.

  16. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Basically there are 3 things ways students can bring change to Feds and make them do what you want.
    1. hold a referendum
    2. add an item to the general meeting agenda
    3. have your Feds representatives add an item to the council meeting agenda
1 is very impractical and 2 only happens twice a year which leaves option 3.

  17. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

There is a meeting every month where the Feds exec and faculty representatives decide on a number of things (a list of them can be found here: http://feds.ca/about/council/councillors). If you have an issue that you think effect a large number of students (ie Fed Hall, Feds' Website, Orientation Week changes) you can ask one of them to add it to the meeting agenda. You can also just email the mailing list (council@list.feds.ca) and ask someone to add it to the agenda.

  18. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Though they could refuse, it is their job to represent you. If you think you can represent students better then your representative then you can bring that up and council can (and has) removed councillors that haven't been doing their jobs, giving you the opportunity to take the position and have a vote on council if you wanted.

  19. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

@16 - last year Matt Colphon (former FEDS President) refused to add items to the general meeting agenda submitted by students even though they were completely reasonable. So, that rules out option #2 as well.

  20. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

@19, isn't that a violation of some rule?

  21. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

    Why is it dysfunctional? Apathy.

The people who run it have no incentive to do a good job because the job is usually just for 1 year, with a handful going 2 years. And it will have no impact on their lives when they leave Waterloo for good. Also, since they get funded no matter what, with the student services fee, they have little impetus to actually change anything. And ultimately, most people are in Waterloo for 4 or 5 years, the first part is just getting used to this place, and the last part is getting out of here. Finally, FEDS has very little major impact on the day to day lives of students although they do provide many useful services and businesses.

  22. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Take over FEDS. FEDS represents the students. When talk and patronizing attitudes become the norm, action is needed. This is your money people, why are you giving it away to people who sit and go on facebook all day? If they have nothing to do then cut back their hours and wages. Demand accountability! Protest!

  23. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

@20, to some extent, but he did possess the power to do that. I saw it as an abuse of power. A motion was brought forward at the following FEDS Council meeting to censure the executive team & board of directors, but it was defeated by one vote.

  24. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Feds is a corporation that is supposed to look out for students, but regularly gets fucked over, tries to hide as much as it can away from students, and generally the clique that run it hate being told that no one gives a shit about their side projects.

  25. Blogger scshunt Says:

@4: Then show up with a bunch of friends and push your agenda through.

@19: In my best reading of the rules, items need not actually be on the agenda to be brought up. It's a rather specific reading of the rules, however, and it would take some significant argument at a GM, plus an important issue, to actually have the matter addressed.

  26. Blogger Floral Wraith Says:

    #20, yes it is.

#16, if you can gather enough signatures, you can call a GM at any point of the year.

#23, the problem with censure is that it does almost nothing. Like, there's no real punishment or anything.

People need to find their councilors and point blank tell them what they do and do not like. When I was in Environment, I can't remember any time when my councilors consulted with general Environment.

Sci, Eng, Math will generally care and cause a fuss over things.

Arts gets weird, because its generally a revolving door of people who do not care and some who do.

How bout that Kumar guy, he's nice.

  28. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

Kumar is creative and receptive to student issues I find. He has done some great stuff while in office.

  29. Anonymous Anonymous Says:

@27 Hey kumar, get back to work!
