I got free breakfast and snacks at Bloomberg, was pretty sweet. Apparently people in the Jersey office got catered breakfasts/lunches too (because Jersey sucks).
@RL: just want to know how I compare and what my chances are at working at an awesome company- what was your average the term you got that job and do you do a lot of open source stuff? Anything else you think helped you get that job?
@10: Yep, Bloomberg has a channel and they often have people over for talks, interviews etc. They also have receptions there occasionally...although employees are not allowed on the main floor for those, after 4-5pm we have to take the stairs out...
@11: My CAV hovers around 85, currently trying to bring it up to 87. I do no open source, I also don't do clubs or volunteer work. My program is a mix of Finance and CS so I imagine that helped + I was working at a Risk Analytics firm during the co-op term before. Just apply and see, they do a lot of interviews.
^ I want to work in both finance and software dev. so your advice to me would be to suck it up and abandon one of them in favor of the other? Real good advice there, mate.
Although I guess you represent ALL the upper year students...so arguing against you is useless (on a sidenote, that would mean you also represent me...weird, eh?).
And you haven't bothered to research the positions available in investment banks, hedge funds/wealth management?
The world does not revolve around you. Nobody cares, and it would be nice not to have to read more of your life story in every fing post on this site...
^ 1) I have researched these positions and talked to people who held similar positions. My primary interest is software and secondary is finance, not many companies can provide a satisfying position and Bloomberg is one of the ones that can. Just because you don't like a position/company doesn't mean it's worthless.
2) #11 specifically asked me to talk about this position. Either you fail at reading or understanding...or both.
Also, now you're apparently representing all people...although the fact that you're taking your time to reply to me indicates that you do indeed care about whatever it is I'm saying. Get your logic straight ;)
Yeah man, you're on my mind all day baby :3. I'm just itching to see your next post on this site. Hope I gave you your daily dose of narcissim by giving you all this attention.
What do I fail at understanding? That you don't know anything about the financial industry? Or would you rather work on some clunky terminal instead?
@17: If only getting a job was as easy as comparing your average to some arbitrary cut-off value. Wait, that would be absolutely terrible!
@18: You fail at understanding when you complain that I post my "life story" in every post when it's clear that someone asked me to elaborate on my experience.
Similar to asking someone for their name and when they reply trying to punch them in the face for making a sound.
^ You're an idiot. It has been shown that standard work structure sucks and can be greatly improved with more rest periods, more flexible hours etc. So taking a 15 min break while playing ping pong might improve performance.
Yeah I turned down Bloomberg before and will do so again. When they ask why I will simply say you hired RL, if you hire him then this job is obviously below me.

^ You mean every startup. They have to balance out the shit pay somehow...
January 28, 2012 10:37 PM
^ usually but I've seen a lot of non-startups do this too
January 28, 2012 10:58 PM
my companies is quite moderate sized one, and even the CEO not wearing shirt to work, and we get up to 12 choice of free coffee/tea/chocolate
January 28, 2012 11:18 PM
^ "not wearing shirt to work"? Wha?

Only 21 and already lived in the big city, eh? What do you look forward to when you are 25? How do you top that?
January 29, 2012 10:57 AM
They all wanna look like Google or Apple
January 29, 2012 11:20 AM
@RL: Yes, but did they have ping pong?
January 29, 2012 2:22 PM
^ No, but we had celebrities in our building every other week. Clooney, Pitt, Jolie...
January 29, 2012 3:59 PM
^ For interviews, right?

@11:
Don't be misled by someone that just likes to ramble about how awesome they are... Bloomberg is not an 'awesome' company.
If you want to work in finance, work at a financial services company. If you want to work in software dev, go to California.
As far as upper year students are concerned, Bloomberg dev is a second rate job. Aim higher.

85% average gets bloomberg? Damn they must be hard up for workers. Guess I will take my 93% average and aim higher.

OH WOW free soda AND ping pong?! My god, it's like you're not even going to work!
Does that bullshit seriously work on applicants?

bloomberg clearly is dumbasfuck if they let RL work for them while he posts his entire diary online daily.
January 31, 2012 7:58 PM
^ If you can procure my diary I will give you 10k. All that's currently in my chequing account =)

^ So you're dumb enough to apply for a job more than once even though you plan to turn it down? Good riddance, I say...
January 31, 2012 11:15 PM
^ They asked me. Wait employers don't come to you asking you to work for them? How sad. Maybe you are not as good as you think you are.
January 31, 2012 11:27 PM
^ They do...but only if I expressed interest in working there in some way, shape or form =)
February 1, 2012 4:05 AM
Yeah, that's the culture in software jobs.
