OMG:
MOD'S NOTE: TLDR - Post is about OP's internal reflection on his/her fellow classmates in Engineering.
I am a guy in engineering and I love my program. However I feel the need to address a few issues regarding my peers and most importantly those students who "represent" engineering.
As someone once told me, "engsoc is run by the people who had no friends in highschool, came to university and found each other", I agree with this statement to some extent. I have met many of the people who run engsoc (and I do appreciate the hard work that they do, specially C&D. But it is your loudness, obnoxiousness, lack of social skills with anyone outside of engineering and even worse (very common in first-second year students) your superiority complex when it comes to other faculties. Lets not forget about the huge circlejerk that is poets, and any other "engineering" event.
Don't get me wrong, you are pretty cool people..but when you all get together...it is like one huge herd...and this is the "engineer" stereotype at our university. It does not affect me personally but you guys are cool and its so sad to see such intelligent people have no idea how to behave or handle people.
I wish some of my fellow engineering peers would understand that being in engineering doesn't make you superior to anybody in any way. I want you to understand the need to develop social skills outside of engineering centered communities.
Another issue that must be addressed is the immaturity of some people attending these engineering events - I understand you didn't get to go out much when you were younger but there is no need to be loud/obnoxious right now. Not everyone in life will agree with you so learn to deal with it. You guys are the reason so many people lose interest in our school and our program. It is a great school despite some inconveniences but it is the way you're perceived that ruins everything for everyone.
One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel.
It is so sad to see that some of the people who take part of engineering events have lost all sense of individualism..its so sad, that I have had a few girls tell me "I am surprised you're not a typical engineering guy" or even worse compliment me for not being like you guys. That is sad, because most of you are really cool but unless you leave the herd mentality, people will always look down on you.

Being in mathematics makes you smarter and cooler than other people. We also get better jobs as programmers, quants, and analysts in software industry, banking, retail supply chain, and on wall street.
We're the best of the best

>obnoxiousness, lack of social skills with anyone outside of engineering
LMFAO
As someone who knows a great deal of engineers (but isn't one himself), the ones In Engsoc aren't the ones with those problems. The social retards are the quiet engineers who never say anything and only joke about stupid math shit.
And I'd hardly call the Engsoc folk obnoxious...you may wanna get a dictionary and check the definition of that word out.
The Engsoc folk are more likely the ones who were popular in high school, and you weren't. sounds like you got a chip on your shoulder.
January 28, 2012 10:05 PM
^ yeah, this. OP's been posting this around the comments for a while now.
Op, Readmymind or not, this problem isn't nearly as large as people blow it up to be.
You sound a little bitter OP. I sense there's more to the story than what you submitted.

@1 As an employer in Palo Alto and a venture capitalist funding over half a dozen start-ups with Waterloo graduates, you are certainly not a hot commodity.
I would hire an Electrical Engineer (preferably Software) over a Math student almost every time.
January 28, 2012 10:15 PM
^ Unfortunately if your views are so biased you will not be a very good venture capitalist.
January 28, 2012 10:24 PM
@4, welcome to OMGUW, I see you've met "boldguy"
January 28, 2012 10:45 PM
@5 You must work for RIM.
My "bias" is how I got to where I am.
I have (like much of the industry) strong conviction in the small group of talented Engineering graduates who have proven they have the technical ability and creative ingenuity needed to develop incredible products and services.
Obviously not every Engineer will be a better employee than every Math major, but statistically speaking, we'd much rather bet on the winning horse. I'm sorry if this means you get left in the cold when interviews come around, but you need to understand that we need to be as metrics driven with our hiring process as we are with our business models.
January 28, 2012 10:56 PM
^ So you want me to believe you're a VC who posts on OMGUW? GET THE FUCK OUT OF HER MOTHERFUCKER. I put some thought before I troll you scumshitbag. You're a butthurt engineering student you disgusting piece of shit.
January 28, 2012 11:16 PM
@8 Get out of who?
Also, I think it would be a disservice to real engineers to call myself an Engineer. I graduated from Stanford majoring in Computer Science and finished my Masters in Business at NYU after realizing that programming was not for me.
Why would I be on this website?
Just as prospective graduates research the culture of the companies they apply to, employers research the culture of the schools they've been scouting.
Great detective work, though! It's always adorable watching spiteful assholes act tough over the internet.
January 28, 2012 11:23 PM
^ Please don't get upset or even respond to him. Everyone here knows him as 'Bold Guy' and he has written much worse. Just a troll!
Best of luck on your research.
January 28, 2012 11:47 PM
@7 No I do not work at RIM. Ever since moving here I have stated that RIM management is nothing but masters in business degree holders that have an unfounded sense of arrogance. They have a management problems with both executive and middle levels. Having a masters in management science is not being a master of management.
If your bias has got you to the position you say you current hold then kudos, in my opinion you are lucky. You talk of statistics which could be from your education with a masters in business. That's great. It could work. But what about innovation and creativity you talk about? It seems like a paradox that you would talk about a set system of rules you use with statistics to find out who is creative or not. Very interesting. Statistics can be very misleading which could point out why the American system is failing currently. Statistics pointed out who would be the best at finance as the better marks would indicate a better worker. Better pay would indicate more incentive. But somehow Wall Street failed. Maybe the truly innovative are not the drones produced from a cookie cutter education.
It is also interesting how you name drop. Giving yourself accreditation that may or may not be true and building upon those as if they are objective evidence.
Maybe your learning and education was incomplete. Maybe instead of looking at the statistics you should look at the individual candidate as a whole instead of using some flow chart allowing you to put the responsibility off yourself. Anyone can look at the spreadsheets, or manage the risk as these are learned from text books. If you are a true venture capitalist you would look for what is to come rather than what already is.
This is what I mean by your bias. Human Resources is weak in the West which is allowing us to fall behind emerging markets. Maybe someone with a degree should think for themselves rather than having a degree do it for them.
I am not an engineering student, I am not a math student.
January 29, 2012 12:19 AM
Standford! Nice try dude. You're better in trolling than me :) They don't teach you in "Standford" that you shouldn't feed the trolls?! I wonder why would a Standford graduate with "MBA" from NYU (wow!) try to childishly defend him/herself on the internet & write a lengthy response just to tell a "spiteful asshole" anonymous troll about his/her qualifications?!
I salute your trolling abilities. But if you're an ivy league graduate for real, then it just makes me sick.
January 29, 2012 12:29 AM
Ivy league is just a name now bold guy, nothing more, nothing less.
January 29, 2012 12:30 AM
This is such a stupid issue. Nobody gives half a fuck off of this stupid site, which itself is nothing more than a bunch of emotional trolls. The fact that this omg was even posted is pretty pathetic.
OP, I'd bet some people on engsoc are embezzling money (probably feds too).
Its nice that you care, but it was really tl;dr. Sure there are some jerkoffs, and sucking engsoc's dick isnt the alternative. I really doubt engsoc could be stopped while keeping c & d, but its a nice idea.
Unrelated: Stop trying to be the bold guy you dipshit, its not funny and its not trolling. You are managing to make yourself look like a tool and despite being anonymous.
January 29, 2012 12:35 AM
@bold: Firstly, spell Stanford right, apparently spelling is not taught at "troll school".
Secondly, fuck off =)
January 29, 2012 1:11 AM
Unfortunately I agree with bold guy. There's no way that guy went to Stanford.
But seriously OP if you are really in engineering WTF is wrong with you? EngSoc is great and has done amazing things for the faculty. Sure some engineers believe they work harder than other programs but tbh they don't go around talking about it as much as you claim. People have better things to do than compare workloads.
Either you are not really in engineering and just wanted to get a lot of comments bc you know engineering is a controversial topic on this site...in which case congrats.
If you are really in engineering...I suggest you drop out since you clearly have no pride in your faculty and seem to hate everyone else in it and believe them to be losers with no friends.
January 29, 2012 1:15 AM
LOL @ whoever apologized to the fake venture capitalist on behalf of Boldie Hawn.
January 29, 2012 1:24 AM
COCKS!!!!
That is all.
January 29, 2012 9:55 AM
@RL non of your fucking business you motherfucker. You're on OMGUW on Saturday 1am? Get life you scumbag.
January 29, 2012 9:58 AM
I hate this website.
January 29, 2012 2:27 PM
@bold: Well, if I don't have a life you don't have one either =)
January 29, 2012 6:25 PM
Well, for any future MBA-holding VCs with degrees from NYU and Stanford...
I present to you the pedigree of a UW education in the posts above.
Narcissists, trolls, and butthurt engineers.
But at least this bold guy is hilarious... haha
January 29, 2012 6:36 PM
MODS why do you keep posting this shit? we've been over this. you suck.

I can't believe you just wrote an essay about that.
I don't give a flying fuck about engineers or engineering. I wish engineers would just fuck off at their earliest possible convenience. Blah blah blah, stop wasting our goddamn time.
January 30, 2012 6:27 PM
RL, you are so obviously the type of kid in public school that walked around picking his nose and eating it, then went into high school and wore headphones the entire time not socializing with anyone, then went into university and thought you were tough shit because your nerdy ass grades got you some lame job with a company full of other fucktards like yourself.
i love the fact that you walk around all day and EVERYONE is laughing at you.
February 1, 2012 4:09 AM
To the VC guy, as a Math graduate who is an employee in Palo Alto, go suck dick.
February 3, 2012 4:10 PM
Post goes from hating on engineering to hating on bold guy. Nice.
February 3, 2012 4:33 PM
@26: Amazingly I was actually popular in high school (outside our small IB program) even though the whole school was pretty ghetto, was quite a surprise to me.
As soon as someone degrades to the level of "nerd" name-calling (with negative connotations) it's immediately obvious that this person has not achieved the success they desired in life and must blame those more successful in some way.
Maybe if you concentrated on improving yourself and not trying to find "faults" in others in order to rationalize your failures you would be a happier person. Just saying... =)
